Tonight we will…. Introduce ourselves Review the nuts and bolts of 5th grade Spend a day in the life of a 5th grader Complete an exit card (with plenty of room for questions).

Nuts and Bolts Small Binder Large Binder Check parent section every night; everything else stays in the binder HW section is student’s responsibility Small Binder Kept at school with all graded work Sent home twice per marking period

Nuts and Bolts Phone Policies Students are not allowed to make phone calls home during the day. Period. Cell Phones are not allowed in school unless written permission is obtained from Ms. Lane. (MCPS Policy)

Nuts and Bolts Homework Nightly: Math assignments (Monday-Thursday) Independent reading (1 skip night/week) Occasional additional assignments Weekly: Written Response Journal (due by Friday) Long-term Projects: TBD (expect at least 3)

Nuts and Bolts Absences Excused absences – Student work will be provided upon return, or placed on the drop off table if requested (shared responsibility) Unexcused absences – Student work will be provided upon return (student responsibility)

Nuts and Bolts School-Related Absences Some fifth grade clubs take students out of school during the school day. Students are expected to pick up missed work on the drop off table and return it the following day (student responsibility) Some fifth grade clubs take students out of the classroom for a short time during the school day. Students are expected to complete missed assignments in a timely manner (shared responsibility)

Nuts and Bolts Testing MAP-R – fall, winter, spring MAP-M – fall, winter, spring MSA – Math and Reading (4 days - March) MSA – Science (2 days – April/May)

Nuts and Bolts Private School The earlier, the better. Three schools only, please. Contact Susan Holcomb for transcript requests. Be sure to read all forms carefully.

Nuts and Bolts Westland Course Placements Usually completed in late January, early February Separate forms for teacher/parent placements The Westland Guidance department is your point of contact.
