How to add detail to your writing

Writing that uses Juicy words Adjectives that tell more about a noun Writing that helps you visualize something (paints a picture…) Creating a snapshot for your audience Using specific words to tell who, why, how, when, where? Using descriptive words called SENSORY words (sight, touch, smell, sounds, taste)

GREY BINDER You are going to use your to help you write descriptions for the following images. Make sure you use your resources & read your sentences carefully (no run-on’s)!

Picture this… Be sure to use COLOR words in your description….

Picture this… bright white sea foam bursts onto the shore as the waves crash. When I look out all I can see for miles is a crystal clear expanse of aqua water. It’s like the world drops off at the end. The gritty snow white sand feels soft and warm beneath my bare feet. When I lazily open my eyes after a salty, balmy afternoon nap, I can see the pointy tips of an emerald green palm tree waving in the coastal breeze.

Crack! Boom! My heart was racing when… Be sure to use SENSORY words in your description….

Crack! Boom! My heart was racing when I reached the weathered steps of the McGuire mansion. Stupid truth or dare… My mouth began to taste of bile, and old Nacho cheese Doritos, as I creeped closer to the front door. Crrrreaaak! Sweat began to drip into my eyes despite the steamy breath coming out of my mouth as the front door slowly swung open. To my surprise, a jolly round woman in a red and white polka dotted apron stood before me and the smell of warm, freshly baked cookies crept onto the front porch. Her cheeks were rosy, her smile was sweet….but her eyes…

Imagine a… Be sure to PAINT A PICTURE in your description….

Paint a Picture The piglet sat quietly, so pale pink it’s almost white, so small it fit in the palm of my hand. It’s tiny, damp, snorting nose nudged my palm and tickled my fingers. Two small, dark eyes looked up at me in adoration. Tiny, fine hairs covered the newborn piggy’s body as it curled up in a warm little ball on my hand to settle for a nap.
