Figurative Language in The Kite Runner

October 28, 2013 Agenda: IR Similies in Kite Runner Turn in RL9 In the Kite Runner Ali is protective of Hassan as a lion is to their cub. Similies in Kite Runner Turn in RL9 Reminder! Remediation this Wednesday: Literary Analysis Learning Target: I can create a simile about my character or setting.

January 25, 2016 Learning Target: I can identify the use of similes in text. Focus question: Create a simile about the protagonist of your IR novel. You don’t need a new Reading Log if you still have your log from last week!

Reading Check! 1. What was the outcome of the kite flying contest? 2. What was the major event the Amir witnesses at the end of Chapter 7? What does he do about it?

Figurative Language: Similes As you read Chapter 7, look for similes and copy the sentence onto your Developing Imagery with Similes Chart. Be sure to include the MLA citation (author page number). Simile: A surprising comparison using the words like or as

Tuesday, January 26th Learning Target: I can identify the use of metaphor and personification in text. Focus question: Create a example of personification about a setting detail in your IR novel .

Wednesday, January 27, 2015 Learning Target: I can analyze the use of extended metaphor in a text. Focus Question: Find an example of a metaphor used in your IR novel. Write it down with the proper MLA citation.

So what is an extended metaphor? I’m going to let Will Ferrell show you…. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yPl3X6whm3A

Extended Metaphor What was Will Ferrell comparing his education to? Did you notice how the comparison, or metaphor ran throughout his speech?

Extended Metaphor An extended metaphor is a metaphor (a comparison) that runs through multiple sentences or lines of text. Example…. An extended metaphor in The Kite Runner is the fractured father/son relationship between Amir and Baba. There are many metaphors and references to this complicated relationship.

“All the world is a stage, and men and women are just merely players.” Extended Metaphor Sometimes the metaphor runs through just a line: “All the world is a stage, and men and women are just merely players.” William Shakespeare

Extended Metaphor Sometimes the metaphor runs through the entire work: “But if you was LeBron James then I’d be Dwyane Wade We both graduated at the same time from the same grade He was at the head of the class, on TV with celebrity acts, But that champion ring was one thing you never could grasp, I was slightly rated lower had to fight to gain exposure and that might’ve made me slower but now I have taken over And I’m down in Miami’s Heat, living my boyhood dreams And for you to do what I’ve done, you’d have to join MY team!” -Iron Solomon

January 28, 2016 Learning Target: I can use close reading strategies to identify different forms of figurative language. Focus question: Create a metaphor about the relationship between two characters in your IR novel. Agenda: 1. Kite Runner 8-11 Quiz 2. IR/Focus Question 3. Survival of the Fittest Close Reading

January 29, 2016 Learning Target: I can demonstrate my understanding of figurative language by writing an original poem. Focus Question: Write down a sentence from your IR novel that has descriptive imagery and cite it using MLA citation. Are you on track to finish your IR book by Feb. 17???????

Where I’m From I am from Shefford Lane West. Riding my pink bike on a dead-end street. I am from linoleum tile floors with shag carpeting Sprawled out with my sister watching The Cosby Show. I am from honey-suckle. Sweetness tickles our nose, But the bees will burn and sting, Jello-pudding pops melting all over our White Keds. I am from talkers From Walter Lapp, Raymond and Oscar. A lair of lawyers. Arguments and sarcasm cut across the kitchen table like a knife. I am from Stephanie Lynn, Don’t touch the ground or you’ll fall in the lava! Scratch, pinch and punch until we draw blood, But, still she sneaks into my She-Ra sheets at night to escape bad dreams.
