About Phonograms * There are 70 phonograms in the English language. They include individual or combinations of letters. * Phonograms were established more than 40 years ago. They simplify the English language.
Teacher prep work to implement Spalding phonograms * Become familiar with the cards and example words on the back. (You will not teach the words to the students.) * Watch the “Writing Road to Reading” videos if you are unsure about pronouncing some phonograms. * Have composition notebooks for each student. (Large rule for kindergarten -2nd) * Have lined paper for assessments.
Lessons & instruction * Students will learn phonograms and spelling/vocabulary words by saying, hearing, reading, and writing. (The Writing Road to Reading) * Correct handwriting is imperative. Teach: Pencil grip Letter formation Top line, middle line, and base line
* First day instruction steps: -Show the cards (Suggested 4 per day, Monday-Thursday) -Say the sounds -Students repeat the sounds -Model and explain correct formation -Students repeat the sounds as they write phonograms * Oral automaticity (GOAL) is needed for fluency and sounding out unknown words. KEY…..DAILY REVIEW * When students become familiar with phonograms, 20-30 can be reviewed in 5-8 minutes. Ask questions during review such as “Would I use ai at the end of play? Why/ why not?”
Written practice and assessments are completed in columns *Written practice and assessments are completed in columns. (No more than 30.) -Teacher says the sounds. -Students say sounds and write. -Teacher shows the card for students to check. -Students check, X mistakes, and correct. (On Thursdays, we completed the entire list as a practice test and “graded” them all at once.) * With cards 27-70, clarify phonograms needed such as A, the two letter A used at the end of a word.

How we incorporated spalding in our ELAR block * Short, whole group introduction of the 4 phonograms including sounds and formation of letters. * During small groups, we created notecards to take home in baggies for homework. * Homework assignment sheet included 10-13 phonograms each week depending on difficulty. * Phonogram instruction began on week 2 and was completed by week 7. * Spelling words began on week 8 with 15 words per week.
