ECFA meeting, 10/10/2008, Athens, Greece C. Markou, NCSR 'Demokritos' Motivation Greek participation to ALICE, ATLAS and CMS experiments HEP community has realized early enough that the management and processing of the LHC data pose unique challenges, requiring novel solutions: Extreme diversity in geographical location, of research groups and resources, differences in administration procedures, the extremely large datasets, long CPU processing times, intensive I/O, require: Integration of all available computing and storage resources Access to resources through unified/transparent interfaces Unique/single user sign-on, identification and authentication Efficient management of code and data sets ……. ECFA meeting, 10/10/2008, Athens, Greece C. Markou, NCSR 'Demokritos'

ECFA meeting, 10/10/2008, Athens, Greece C. Markou, NCSR 'Demokritos' The Grid and related technologies seem able to serve these purposes well (especially today after a long and difficult path of development which lasted for almost a decade). Chosen as the solution for the LHC computing infrastructure. Greek HEP groups got involved in Grid related projects and activities. ECFA meeting, 10/10/2008, Athens, Greece C. Markou, NCSR 'Demokritos'

ECFA meeting, 10/10/2008, Athens, Greece C. Markou, NCSR 'Demokritos' Partners All the HEP groups in Greece, i.e: Institute of Nuclear Physics, NCSR ‘Demokritos’ (CMS) University of Athens (ALICE, ATLAS and CMS) National Technical University of Athens ( ATLAS) University of Thessaloniki (ATLAS) University of Ioannina (CMS) Collaborating with GRNET SA – the Greek Academic network provider, and leading the Grid efforts in a nation-wide context Computer Science departments in UoA, NTUA, AUTh, UoP, etc… ECFA meeting, 10/10/2008, Athens, Greece C. Markou, NCSR 'Demokritos'

Projects – Grid evolution in Greece First steps in middleware related projects funded by the EU, like CrossGrid 2002-2005, et al … Middleware testing and validation of production-grade software Configuration, operation and maintenance of production testbeds Gain expertise and know-how Build collaborations and links with other national and international groups. First small scale Grid clusters built and maintained through these efforts Great learning experience!! ECFA meeting, 10/10/2008, Athens, Greece C. Markou, NCSR 'Demokritos'

ECFA meeting, 10/10/2008, Athens, Greece C. Markou, NCSR 'Demokritos' Participation in more mature projects like EGEE (2004-2006), EGEE-II (2006-2008), EGEE-III (2008-2010), GridCC, SEE-Grid, etc… Infrastructure support and operations Grid Core services User Support and Application support Middleware development, testing and validation Software deployment coordination Certification and Registration authorities User training ECFA meeting, 10/10/2008, Athens, Greece C.
