Hydrolysis Reactions

Hydrolysis Reactions These are the OPPOSITE of neutralization reactions (i.e. acid-base reactions) Rather than forming a salt and water from an A-B reaction, a salt and water react to form an acid and a base. You MUST determine if you have a Strong or Weak Acid and a Strong or Weak Base.

Hydrolysis Reactions Strong Acids = CBS and PIN HCl HBr H2SO4 and HClO4 HI HNO3 Strong Bases = Group IA and IIA (Mg-Ba) SA and SB MUST be shown as dissociated. All soluble reactants and products MUST be should as dissociated. Keep WA and WB together

Hydrolysis Reactions NaCl + HOH HCl + NaOH Na+ + Cl- + HOH H+ + Cl- + Na+ + OH- HOH H+ + OH-

Hydrolysis Reactions NH4Cl + HOH HCl + NH4OH NH4+ + Cl- + HOH H+ + Cl- + NH4OH KF + HOH KOH + HF K+ + F- + HOH K+ + OH- + HF
