Outline of Discussion Health Promoters Health Promotion Canada evolution Function of a local Chapter (of HPC) Atlantic Chapter Ways to get involved Questions?

Health Promoter Main role and function is health promotion. Their work reflects the Ottawa Charter’s strategies and actions. Where? E.g. community health centres, government departments, Public Health, NGOs, health charities, university/academic health promoters etc.

After 3-years of working with you to develop the Pan-Canadian Health Promoter Competencies –the Pan-Canadian Committee on Health Promoter Competencies has sunset. June 2016, a new entity called: Health Promotion Canada emerged. Summer 2016 logo consultation occurred Fall 2016 mission, vision, and values established.

Mission: support the advancement of health promotion practice in Canada Vision: By 2026, HPC will be a vibrant, connected and effective collaborative for workforce development and action in health promotion. So that by 2046, all health promoters are equipped to foster health equity for all in communities across Canada.

How will HPC achieve this? Enhance the capacity of health promotion students, practitioners and employers. Enhance the capacity of HPC National Executive. Support the development of local Chapters of HPC across Canada (e.g. infrastructure).

Local Chapters Health Promotion Ontario has been around for over 30 years Chapters are in development across Canada Structure of Chapter varies across Canada, aligned with: a local university A Public Health Association An independent Community of Practice Yet to be determined….

Aims to engage those studying, volunteering and working in the Atlantic Provinces in the field of Health Promotion to advance the profession, while raising the profile of Health Promoters. Seeks to advance the critical importance of health promotion and its practice through professional development, membership, member communication, and advocacy.

Functions of a local chapter representing health promoters on local, provincial and national levels; providing leadership opportunities at the local level; preparing students for active membership within health promotion; providing the opportunity to network with other health promoters on educational, professional and social levels;

We would like to build Health Promotion Atlantic together… LEADER: a 2/3 year commitment, work together to lead the establishment of the Atlantic Chapter ACTIVE MEMBER: a 2/3 year commitment, member of steering and working groups SUPPORTER: cannot participate, but can designate individual(s) and support their participation as an active member or leader ADVOCATE: rally for and promote the establishment of HP Atlantic
