Overview *Max S. Hayes serves about 700 students in grades 9-12. *Approximately 80% of our graduates enter college. *22 credits are required to graduate.

Role of the High School Counselor 3 Components Social Academic Career/College Planning

General Info Students must have 22 credits and completion of courses in each core area. Students must pass all 5 parts of the Ohio Graduation Test. 10th Grade- 5 credits 11th Grade- 11 credits 12th Grade- 16 credits Each class is worth ½ credit per semester except for your trade classes, Gym and Advisory.

Career/College Planning 9th grade-Visit Your Counselor/Career Fairs/Work on GPA 10th grade-Career Exploration Assessment/College Naviance Planning 11th grade-PSATs/ACT/College Essays/College Visits 12th College Application Process begins in the Fall of Senior Year.

Understanding Grade Point Average GPA Marking Period grades are given at the end of each 9 week term. A MP grade point average (GPA) is calculated based on the grade for each marking period eligibility for participation in extracurricular activities and sports.

Understanding Grade Point Average GPA Semester GPA is calculated in January and June. This is used to determine honor roll, merit roll, ect. It also goes onto your permanent transcript. FOREVER

Understanding Credits Credits are earned each semester in January and June. ½ of the total credit for the course is given each semester. Question: If I get a “C” in World History this report card, but when the semester ends in January I have an “F”. Do I get credit for the class?

Graduation Requirements 4.5 English credits (.5 During your senior year is Senior Seminar) 4 Math credits – You must take math each year. Minimum = Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus 3 Science credits Physical Science, Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry OR Physics

Graduation Requirements continued 3 Social Studies credits World History, American History, Government 1 Fine Art Credit (unless you complete your trade) .5 Health and .5 Physical Education credit. Phys. Ed is taken all year. 1 Foreign Language credit 4.5 Elective credits GRAND TOTAL = 22 CREDITS

Ohio Graduation Test Must pass all 5 parts in order to graduate. A passing score is 400 Reading Math Writing Science Citizenship

Are There Other Ways to Get A Diploma???? Pass four of the five tests and have missed passing the fifth test by no more than 10 scale score points; Have had a 97 percent attendance rate each of the last four years and must not have had an expulsion in the last four years; Have a grade point average of 2.5 out of 4.0 in the subject area missed and have completed the curriculum requirement in the subject area missed;

Are There Other Ways to Get A Diploma???? Have participated in any intervention programs offered by the school and must have had a 97 percent attendance rate in any program offered outside the normal school day or year, including those offered by someone other than the school; Obtain letters of recommendation from each teacher in the subject area not yet passed and the high school principal.

PRE-COLLEGE CURRICULUM Colleges require prospective students to have had a more rigorous curriculum. PCC for selective colleges: 4 years of English 4 years of Math 4 years of Science 3 years of Social Studies 2-3 years of the same foreign language 1 year of Arts/Humanities

Learn From Them Everything you do in high school is kept on record and is never erased. (absences, tardies, suspensions, grade, etc) Start off on the right foot!!!
