Look at this chemical equation and the question below it: Question: This equation expresses which change? Choose the correct letter on your formative assessment (ABCD) card. Don’t let your neighbors see your answer. A. Two atoms combine to form one atom. B. Two atoms combine to form one molecule. C. Two elements combine to form a mixture. D. Two elements combine to form two new elements.

Before we start the Clue game, let’s briefly review.

Complete this phrase. When you are trying to balance a chemical equation, changing a subscript is a “no-no” because changing a subscript… changes the substance. (When we balance equations, we aren’t changing the substances…but we may have to change how many molecules there are of each substance. So, we use coefficients.)

How does balancing equations illustrate and support the Law of Conservation of Mass/Matter? *Because they require that you have the same mass after the reaction as you do before the reaction. This means… *The # and type of atoms are the same in the reactants and products (just in different combinations) *Although the state of matter of the products may be different from the reactants, the overall mass doesn’t change.

Let’s go over the practice problems on the “Balancing Act” sheet.
