THUNDERSTORMS

What is a thunderstorm? A storm that contains lightning and thunder. Produced by cumulonimbus clouds. Creates gusty winds Heavy rain Even hail sometimes!

Weather during a thunderstorm Hail The largest piece of hail to ever fall was in July. It measured 8” in diameter and weighed 1.94lbs. Heavy rain The average amount of water that falls during a thunderstorm is about 2,000 metric tons. Gusty winds Highest wind speed ever recorded was 150mph in 1962. Thunder&Lightning Thunder and lightening go hand in hand when it comes to thunderstorms.

Conditions to create a thunderstorm Forms when moist, unstable air is lifted vertically into the atmosphere. Moisture is needed to form clouds. Unstable air that is relatively warm and can rise fast is needed. Lift can form from fronts sea breezes or mountains Lifting of the air results in condensation and the the release of leftover heat.

Where and when thunderstorms occur Thunderstorms occur everywhere there is not one place a thunderstorm occurs. However they are most likely to occur in the tropical areas. WHEN Thunderstorms happen all year round, they are most likely to happen in the spring and summer.

Predicting thunderstorms Air pressure You can predict a thunderstorm using a barometer. When the pressure is low you are going to have cloudy days, when the pressure is really low you are going to have a thunderstorm.

ARGENTINA The worst thunderstorms happen in Argentina. Hundreds of people were evacuated from homes. At least 12 deaths happened because of the thunderstorm on December 7 2013.
