The Bologna Process 10 YEARS AFTER THE REFORM

How it began: The Bologna Process was founded by many European countries to improve the mobility of students in the member countries and the international acceptance of graduations/ university degrees.

The 10 Bologna Process action lines: Adoption of a system of easily readable and comparable degrees Adoption of a system essentially based on two cycles Establishment of a system of credits Promotion of mobility Promotion of European co-operation in quality assurance Promotion of the European dimension in higher education Focus on lifelong learning Inclusion of higher education institutions and students Promotion of the attractiveness of the European Higher Education Area Doctoral studies and the synergy between the European Higher Education Area and the European Research Area

We asked students at several universities and these are their experiences: to get a decent degree you have to study longer ( German Diploma 4 years / Master 5 years) Bachelor Graduates aren't well- prepared to start work after having finished studying- Master degree is required only 20 % of the Bachelor graduates can study in a Master program to be better qualified for their future job the system is like in school and leaves little choice the German Diploma had a higher status huge pressure on the students because of the many exams main aim: employability too many subjects are highly specialized and cannot be found elsewhere

many students and professors are unsatisfied with the situation and complain about its complex structure mobility is a problem even within Germany, there is not enough time to plan a semester abroad

Case study: Studying abroad

Getting started: having started studying the study course “Communications” at the University of Mannheim I decide to continue my studies in Luxembourg in Luxembourg the “Faculties of Science, Technology and Communication” include my favourite study course. I want to study in Luxembourg for 2 terms after having studied 2 terms in Mannheim. Case study: Studying abroad

Campus Europae The University of Luxembourg is a member of Campus Europae. Student exchange with Campus Europae is generally carried out by the agreements signed between the member universities for the different study programmes. An Erasmus grant can be given to participating students for a stay abroad of one year within the Campus Europae programme. Case study: Studying abroad

When you arrive in Luxemburg Go to the SEVE Mobility (organisation to accompany the incoming and outgoing students) to carry out the last stages of your registration (student card...) Before you return: Have the SEVE Mobility sign your certificate of stay Case study: Studying abroad

A POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT ! Because Luxemburg is a member of Campus Europae, students from the EU can easily study abroad. The university offers a programme where students get paid the fees. At the universities students from other countries are welcomed in a very friendly way so you feel safe even if you move to a completely unknown country! Studying abroad in Luxembourg is possible and very easy, because there are enough organizations to give support and money in a foreign country. Case study: Studying abroad

Conclusion: On the whole: PROBLEMS The intentions were good, but the Bologna reform needs a reform. We want: more choice real mobility to think and understand  We don't want: a constant examination period (ten times more exams!) empty titles without substance standardization by a low standard
