Multiplication & Division
How do we multiply? Well, lets start with something called “repeated addition”
Lets say we have 2 cookies… 1 2 3 4 5 6 How many cookies do we have? And then one of our friends gives us 2 more… 3 4 Another friend gives us 2 more… 5 6
We now have SIX cookies!!! During this problem, we were adding 2 cookies each time… 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 This could also be written as 2 x 3… which means 3 groups of 2 cookies
How many horses would we have total? We would have EIGHT horses!! Lets try one more… What if we have 4 stables with 2 horses in each stable (2 x 4)? 2 + 2 + + 2 2 = How many horses would we have total? We would have EIGHT horses!!
“repeated subtraction” Now, how do we divide? Well, lets start with something called “repeated subtraction”
Lets say we have 9 toy cars…. Then, you want to give 3 of the cars to your friend… Another one of your friend notices the cool cars you gave away and asks is they can have some too. You give them 3 of your cars… You then decide to keep the last 3 cars for yourself…
1 2 3 How many people, including yourself, were able to keep 3 cars? In this problem we took 3 cars away from the 9 original cars 3 times. This could also be written as 9÷3=3.
Let’s try one more… 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 What if we have 12 students in a classroom and the teacher separates them in to 3 groups (12÷3)? 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 How many students would be in each group? There would be FOUR students in each group!!
Now that we have had a few examples of both multiplication (repeated addition) and division (repeated subtraction), pick one of these problems and write your own story to represent them! 2 x 6 7 x 3 20 ÷ 4 14 ÷ 2 3 x 4 15 ÷ 3 5 x 4 18 ÷ 6
