THE DESTRUCTABLE CYCLONE YASI BY: Jess

The unfortunate event that occurred on February 2nd-3rd 2011 was unforgettable. Cyclone Yasi

DID YOU KNOW…? Yasi’s damage was estimated to cost up to 3.5 Billion dollars to recover.

Point of origin The deathly winds that hit North Queensland didn’t start out as forceful. With a starting destination of Fiji, it was only a category one cyclone. But whilst passing, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea, Yasi’s destructive winds became stronger and more dangerous. Turning into a category five cyclone.

DID YOU KNOW…? Yasi wasn’t as destructive as meteorologists expected.

Yasi’s personal information Cyclone Yasi was a dangerously large Cyclone. It was recorded up to 500km wide. The center of a Cyclone is called an eye, it is dead still. Cyclone Yasi’s eye was up to 60km wide.

DID YOU KNOW…? That cyclones spin clockwise.

Classification/Description Yasi was known for its category five winds, and destruction. Cyclone Yasi first hit near Mission Beach, with winds up to 290 kilometers per hour. The winds were battering all the through the night. A majority of homes were now useless. It’s a good thing that safety centers were successful. Locals were warned before Yasi, some took the advice and started packing all valuables, but some wanted to see Yasi in action.

GLOSSARY Category/Categories Categories of a Cyclone mean how dangerous it can be, or become. Cyclone An extremely forceful vortex that causes major damage. Destruction The action or process of causing great amount of damage to something, it can either no longer exist, or cannot be fixed. Majority A large amount of something. North Queensland It is a part of Queensland Australia, on the coast. Forceful It is something that is either extremely powerful or just powerful. Mission Beach It is in north Queensland, right where cyclone Yasi hit. Safety Center A safety Center is built stronger than regular houses, so when a cyclone is going to occur, residents go there to be safe. Eye The center of a cyclone is dead still. The eye is the center of a storm, in this case a cyclone. Meteorologists A meteorologists is a scientist that observes earths forecast. Estimated It is an average on how much it is, or in this case cost.
