Writer’s Notebook Entry

Get your NOOK!

Warm Up: Persuasive Essay Pre-writing Practice Read the prompt. Then brainstorm for each side. Then pick the side you have more reasons/ examples for and write a clear thesis that includes two reasons.

Chapter 10: As you read… * Use a star for significant information, devices, and strategies you notice. ! Use an exclamation point to indicate what you feel strongly about in the article. ? Use a question mark next for parts that are confusing or next to any information that you’d like to explore further.

Share with your group! Each group member will share at least two quotes that they marked. (person with the lightest hair goes first).

Discussion Questions: With your partner, pick one of the questions below to answer in your writer’s notebook. What is the usefulness and significance of a story like Bra Spider to the culture that tells and retells it? What is the significance of Beah’s name-giving ceremony? Why does he share that story at this point in the book?

Share your answers with your group The person with the longest hair goes first.

Chapter 10 Writer’s Notebook Reflection On page 70, Saidu, one of the boys says, “How many more times do we have to come to terms with death before we find safety?” He continues to say, “Every time people come at us with the intention of killing us, I close my eyes and wait for death. Even though I am still alive, I feel like each time I accept death, part of me dies. Very soon I will completely die and all that will be left is my empty body walking with you. It will be quieter than I am.” The old saying is that which does not kill us, makes us stronger. Are there some things that just kill us slowly instead of building our strength? Explain your answer.

Share your responses with your group… Each person should read or closely paraphrase their entry. Be prepared to share with the class. Also, leave your writer’s notebook on the table. I am checking them today!
