Hominid Evolution. Humans did not evolve from monkeys but from apelike ancestors that evolved independently of the pro-simians 25 million years ago,
 2 Divisions of Primates  1. Anthropoid primates  2. Prosimean primates  Characteristics:  Nails (no claws)  Prehensile hands and feet (grasping)

Genus & Species- Homo sapiens Human Classification Kingdom- Animal Phylum- Chordate Class- Mammal Order- Primate Family- Hominid Genus & Species- Homo sapiens

Mammal Characteristics Hair Specialized Teeth Milk Producing Females Examples: Cats, Dogs, Whales, Dolphins

Primate Primates- group of mammals including monkeys, apes and humans. 1. Opposable thumb 2. Sensitive fingers not claws 3. Free moving arms 4. Hand- Eye coordination 5. Binocular Vision 6. Large Brain

Hominids Hominids- anthropoids the evolved into humans. Characteristics separating humans from gorillas S-shaped spine. Spinal cord attaches to bottom of skull. Bipedal Bowl shaped pelvis

Lucy Oldest hominid skeleton that has found almost complete. Lived between 3 and 4 million years ago. Flat nose, low forehead, no chin, bipedal, skull similar to chimps, teeth similar to human, and they ate off the land. Luke ? (Pelvis shape)

Early Homo Sapiens Neanderthals- short, strong, heavier brow, larger nose, smaller chin. First to use tools- Flint, Bone, Axes and Stone

Early Homo sapiens Cro-Magnon- similar to modern humans, vertical forehead, no eyebrow ridge, prominent chin, tall. Developed language, culture, social structure, and tools.
