Focus: Students will identify how marijuana is used medically Focus: Students will identify how marijuana is used medically. Goal: To understand the medical uses of THC. Standard: NHES #1 Health Promotion Warm-Up: Interview your peers. Record their answers. What is euphoria? What does fat-soluble mean? What did we mean when we said “Users reports a change in how they understand time”? Create a critical thinking question.

Notes: 1. When made synthetically and given orally, THC may lessen nausea associated with chemotherapy in cancer patients. 2. Synthetic THC may also help people with AIDS to regain their appetite. 3. Synthetic THC can also be used to treat glaucoma, which is the build-up of pressure on the eyeball.

The Eye The LENS - helps to refract light to be focused on the retina The IRIS - contracts or expands the pupil in order to let light into the interior of the eye. The CORNEA – is a cover. The RETINA – light sensitive layer of tissue where images are created. The OPTIC NERVE- transmits visual information from the retina to the brain. The PUPIL – opening that allows light to enter the retina.

Glaucoma of The Eye

4. Synthetic THC produces very little euphoria. 5. The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has approved pills that contain THC, for legal distribution with a doctor’s prescription. 6. The THC pill is only available in certain states.

Group Work Discuss/debate with your group mates and record the information. Do you feel that THC should be available in all states for medicinal purposes? Explain. Pros/cons. Do you feel marijuana should be sold legally in the United States? Explain. Pros/cons.
