Ohlone College Connections 2010-2011

History of the Program Ohlone College Connections was developed between Ohlone College and F.U.S.D. to provide an opportunity for high school seniors to begin earning their college credits while finishing up their graduation requirements. The program has had two graduating classes in 2008 and 2009 and will have it’s third graduating class in June 2010.

How To Qualify Students must be on track to graduate by the end of their Junior Year without the need of summer school. Students must have passed both ELA and Math CAHSEE. Students need to have a 2.5 or above GPA. Students must have an interest in starting their college experience during their senior year.

The Schedule Students will follow a different schedule then at their high school. For the high school portion, students will meet Monday – Friday from 8:30 am to 12:45 pm with their High School Instructor. Students are required to take 1 or more Ohlone College Course(s) outside of the high school portion of the day. These classes are chosen by the student and an Ohlone Counselor.

High School Courses Students will take the following courses with their High School Instructor to meet their High School Graduation Requirements and to earn some extra elective credits over the school year. English 12 A (10 credits) American Government (10 credits) Economics (10 credits) Literature, Justice, & Society (10 credits) You & The Law (10 credits) Humanities 12 (10 credits)

Ohlone College Courses Students can enroll in any number of Ohlone College Courses that begin after 1:00 pm. Students schedules after 12:45 will vary depending on their Ohlone College Courses. Tuition is free for the students. Students do need to pay for their books and a parking pass.

What will be different? Students will no longer be on their high school campus. All high school courses and Ohlone College courses will be taken here at Ohlone College. Students will follow the Ohlone College schedule. Classes will begin on August 30th and will end in May. Students will need to take on more responsibility in their academics as they will be treated as a College Student in their College Courses and will need to stay on top of their assignments and grades. Parents will not have access to contact the Ohlone Instructors/Professors regarding progress or grades in the Ohlone courses.

The Benefits Students will be able to earn transferrable college units while still in high school. Students will not have to pay the $26/unit for the college courses. Students tend to become more responsible and feel like a “college student”. Students will have access to Ohlone services such as counseling, clubs, etc. Students will still be able to complete their FUSD graduation requirements and graduate with their home high school class.

Some things to think about… College Connections students rarely are on their high school campus. They will miss many activities at their high school, but will be able to join in activities at Ohlone. There will be some occasions that these students can participate in high school events if it does not conflict with their Ohlone classes such as Spirit Week, International Week, Prom, etc. Students can participate in high school Sports or have a job as long as the students schedule their Ohlone Classes around games and practice times. Please check with the coaches about time commitments so you can be sure to pick Ohlone classes that will fit in your schedule.

How to get started ? 1st: Submit an application of interest to your Counselor. 2nd: Take Ohlone’s English and Math Placement Tests. 3rd: Meet with an Ohlone Counselor to help pick the Ohlone Courses to register for.
