Level Up your Classroom

Why do we play games?

Gamification Applying game mechanics to a non-gaming environment

Richard Bartle’s Player Types All Games Have 4 Elements Goal Feedback Rules Voluntary participation

Richard Bartle’s Player Types

Flow in the Classroom At the beginning of many games, there are tutorial missions. You must learn how the game works before facing any real challenges. Provide students with the appropriate challenge at the appropriate time.

Gamer Lingo Quest/Mission Battles (Minion, Boss, Epic) Experience Points (XP) Game Master Challenge Scouting Crafting Training Loot Warp

Gamer Lingo Quest/Mission - Unit Battles - Assessments Minion(Quiz) Boss(Test) Epic(Final) Experience Points (XP) - Grades Game Master Challenge – Knowledge Check Scouting – Reading/Notes Crafting – Daily Activities Training – Labs, Extra Activities Loot - Rewards Warp – Project

Yep, it’s that simple! Now you’ll have 100% engagement! Renaming mundane “school things” using gaming terms can help create a more exciting classroom experience. Yep, it’s that simple! Now you’ll have 100% engagement!

Game over !

Gamified LMS

Gamified LMS Students choose their guilds (groups) Pick a character type (mage, warrior, healer) Earn experience points (XP) as they move through the material and unlock new powers Lose HP (health points) for failing to master concepts, and bad behavior

Gamified LMS Use AP (ability points) to use powers that can help you or your teammates Earn gold to swag out your character (buy armor) Train pets that can appear alongside your character

Gamified LMS If your character “dies” you must accept a random consequence AND each team member loses health points Fosters a collaborative environment where students help each other out

Pricing Free Version $12 per month (or $96 annually) Unlimited students and classes Missing some features $12 per month (or $96 annually) All of the things

Building Your Class Establish game rules Customize powers Create daily events Create sentences Load class content Populate with students

Game Rules How much XP will students need to earn to level up? How often do you plan on rewarding or punishing students?

Customize Powers How much control do you want your students to have? How much collaboration do you want?

Create Daily Events These can be used as warm-ups, or a way to focus student attention at the beginning of class. Classcraft provides some default events, but you can customize.

Create Sentences What consequences do you want for your students? Sentences are randomly assigned when a student falls in battle.

Load Class Content What do you want your students to have access to? Do you want online assignments? Class content can be used to post discussion topics, files, or assignments that can be turned in.

Populate with Students Add first and last names of students. Classcraft generates a unique code for that student to sign up (and one for a parent account). Several copy/paste options.

A few thoughts… You don’t have to be a gamer to thrive Works great with a flipped classroom model Be very mindful of the dynamic you create
