Warm Up Instructions: If the following sentences are correct, write the word correct. Otherwise, fix the verb so that it agrees with its subject.Do not write the sentences down only write the corrected verb or the word "correct".       1.                  The world (change, changes) so rapidly that we can hardly keep up. 2.                  People (is, are) often ten or twenty years behind the times in their knowledge of the world. 3.                  People who (live, lives) in poverty often do not even have television or newspapers. 4.                  He (doesn’t, don’t) want to be killed.     5.                  Life (is, are) very complicated

Group Practice – Close Reading Week 3 Get into your assigned groups of 4. Assign one member of the group to get your reading packets from me. Use your answer sheets to discuss the answers. ->Use your rationale in your discussions. You must have one written. When you establish a group answer, write it in the group answer portion of the answer sheet. You have 20 min. to complete.

Tone Activity – Rewrite a story – The devils were eight or nine feet tall, with wild and tangled hair. Their horrific bodies were blackish and hairless, and their eyes as round as monkey’s eyes and as fierce as the bluest point of a flame. Apart from some seaweed they had encased around their waists they were naked, but all sorts of pictures were etched onto their skin, with a sort of glowing outline, like the embers of a flame, framing each picture. Each devil carried a long, jagged staff. What tone best describes the author’s feelings/attitude toward the sea creatures? Now you try to write it to reflect a different tone.

Tone Activity Cont. ReWrite the previous passage to reflect a new tone then illustrate your creature creation: Example: – The angels were elegant and soaring, with tresses that sparkled and floated in the sunlight. Their graceful figures were ethereal and their eyes as gentle as the kiss of Spring. Apart from thin layers of silk that floated like capes around them, they were nude. Their clothing was airy—as if they were clothed in clouds. Light emanated from their skin as if sunrays escaped from each pore. Like seraphs co-existing with sea life, they brought a healing touch to their surroundings. Each angel carried with them a shimmering staff of gold.

SVA Get a worksheet and complete following the guidelines at the top of each page.

Closure 3, 2, 1 Write: 3 things you have learned about tone today. 2 examples subject verb agreement. 1 question you still have regarding today’s lesson.
