TIS Scrutiny Approved Accreditation Pilot Nicola Thom Executive Director (Operations)

Key benefits of accreditation External validation of our journey Seal of approval – have we missed anything? Recognition of the commitment and hard work of our tenants Validation for staff

Key benefits of accreditation Increased self awareness – critical element of scrutiny Breaks down barriers between landlord and tenant – demonstrable and tangible Some of the things we were doing we didn’t recognise as ‘scrutiny’ until we started pulling everything together Embedded in role profiles Appraisal objectives for all staff Consultation calendar

What makes it work Commitment from senior management and board Commitment from tenants Staff buy-in Training – both external and in-house Embracing difficult conversations Understanding what is/isn’t scrutiny

What makes it work Different views – i.e. staff and tenant perspective – but everyone working to same outcomes Partnership and trust between staff and tenants – all driven by the desire to achieve positive change Staff now routinely ask ‘why’ rather than doing things ‘because that’s the way we’ve always done it’ – culture shift

Lessons learnt Communication is key to everything - we don’t always get it right Take regular steps back to evaluate how things are going Focus groups – however small – can give valuable insight Challenge views/perceptions Don’t be afraid of a healthy debate!

Next Steps Keep up momentum and enthusiasm Share best practice 3 staff now trained to deliver Stepping up to Scrutiny – will work with other local RSLs to deliver training to tenants How do we recruit “fresh blood”? Modernise our approach within our communities – doesn’t need to be board room meetings
