Measurement in science 7th grade science 2011

After the quiz… Fold the colored paper in half hamburger style Glue it in the next page of your science notebook Title it “MEASUREMENT IN SCIENCE” Copy the following table on the inside cover (not too big) Number to 10 After this, begin page 10 & 11 in the packet Object Measurement 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

When Measuring… Always use a unit Be precise cm, mL, g, mm, Be precise No rounding, no estimating (unless specified) NEVER use fractions, ONLY use decimals 16 1/2 – NO!!! 16.5- YES!!!

Customary vs. Metric Why should you use metric over customary in science? Based on a 10 point scale Easier to use

Customary vs. Metric

MEASUREING MASS Tool: electronic scale and balance Use: to measure the amount of matter in an object Common Unit: gram (g), kilogram (kg) 1 kilogram= 1000 grams **make sure scale is always set to gram (g)**

X

MEASURING TIME Tool: stopwatch Use: to measure time elapsed Common unit: seconds (sec), minutes (min), hours **Read directions- do you stop watch during a lab or does it keep running through experiment**

MEASURING LENGTH Tool: Meter stick, ruler Use: to measure distance Common unit: meter (m), centimeter (cm), millimeter (mm) 10 mm = 1cm 100 cm = 1 m **No fractions/inches/ feet… all metric measurement**

Measuring Length How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? What is the length of the line in centimeters? _______cm What is the length of the line in millimeters? _______mm What is the length of the line to the nearest centimeter? ________cm HINT: Round to the nearest centimeter – no decimals. Ruler: http://www.k12math.com/math-concepts/measurement/ruler-cm.jpg

MEASURING TEMPERATURE Tool: thermometer Use: to measure how fast or slow particles are moving in an object Common units: Celsius (C0), Fahrenheit (F0) **watch your scale**

What is the difference between temperature and heat? Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of atoms. Thermometersare used to measure temperature In other words: the faster the atoms move = the higher the temperature, & the slower the atoms move = the lower the temperature. Less Heat More Heat

MEASURING VOLUME Tool: Graduated cylinder or ruler (L x W x H) Use: to find how much space an object takes up Common unit: Liter (L), milliliter (mL) 1000 mL = 1 L **watch your scale & read at the bottom of the meniscus (curve)**
