APW1 Chapter 2 Agricultural Societies Date APW 1 Homework Assignment Chapter 2 9/26/17 DUE 9/29/17 PICTURES/visual documents: FROM STRAYER BOOK (pp. 76-83)—This assignment is not to be submitted to turn it in. Nonetheless, it must be in your homework folder on 9/29/16. Thus, you may hand-write your work BUT any written homework must be done in PEN. To answer the picture section of Strayer do the following. Follow the same form that you used for the Documents which is: Read and outline each document introduction/preface. (Remember when you outline, you determine what the key points the author is making and add evidence/facts to inform each of those key points. Examples of good outlines were discussed in class.) After you have completed your outline, answer the questions that you have been assigned to answer. IMAGE 2.1– (a) Read the introduction to this image (p.76) and outline the key points about the image. (b) On p. 77 there are 4 red bulleted questions. Answer the 1st 3 questions. IMAGE 2.2—(a) Read the introduction to this image (at bottom of p. 77) and summarize it. (b) Describe image 2.2. (b) Answer the following questions: How have feminist scholars interpreted this figurine? What might be an alternative point of view? Explain. IMAGE 2.3—(a) Read the introductions (pp. 78-79) summarize it. (b) Describe this image (p. 80). (c) Answer the following questions: What activities are taking place in this image? How might inferences be made about social roles/class from this image? Explain. IMAGE 2.4—(a) Read introduction to this image (pp. 80-81); summarize it. IMAGE 2.5—(a) Read introduction to this image (pp. 82-83) and summarize it. (b) Answer the following question: Some scholars have dubbed this Nok sculpture “thinker”. Does it seem more likely that this notion reflects a present-day sensibility or that it might be an insight into the mentality of the ancient artist who created the image? Explain. MARGIN QUESTIONS— Top Margin Question score is generally 60 points + 5 points rigor = 65 points The format for the margin questions is similar to the big picture format. You being with an outline and then you write your essay paragraph. The format is below: MARGIN QUESTION: Write the margin question and the page number of the question. (10 points) EVIDENCE: provide evidence—evidence is brief and specific. It’s a solid fact or an example. REMEMBER: The more evidence you gather, the stronger your essay will be. (20 points) CONCLUSION/SUMMATIVE ANALYSIS: Bullets 1, 2 and 3 above act as your paragraph outline; there you define the direction of your brief essay. Now it’s time to write your essay. Begin with your claim; here you restate the margin question. Then, you should analyze each piece of evidence to show how it supports your first sentence/claim. When done sum up your message with a final sentence (“a link”) that concludes your brief essay. (30 points) EXAMPLE— Change (p. 51): What accounts for the emergence of agriculture after countless millennia of human life without it? E1 (PROVIDE EVIDENCE) E2 (PROVIDE EVIDENCE) CONCLUSION/SUMMATIVE ANALYSIS: Now it’s time to write your short essay. Begin with your claim. Then, you should analyze each piece of evidence to show how it supports your claim. When done sum up your message with a final sentence (“a link”) that concludes your brief essay. (30 points) ALL HW SHOULD BE TYPED AND SAVED TO YOUR HOME COMPUTER. IT SHOULD ALSO BE PRINTED OUT AND PLACED IN YOUR HOMEWORK FOLDER.
