Government Systems Government is a group of people with the right to make laws in an area Government is seen as necessary to maintain order and prevent chaos

Authoritarian (autocracy) Oldest form of government All power is controlled by the state Limited personnel freedoms

Monarchy State is ruled by a monarch for life The next ruler is generally the son of the monarch Absolute monarchy – King has complete power Constitutional monarchy – King shares power with a parliament or rules under a constitution

Aristocracy Power is held by a small group They are chosen by certain criteria Wealth Education Ancestry They share power with each other but not the rest of the citizens

Democracy Power is held collectively by all of the people All laws are voted on and passed by all of the citizens There are no leaders

Republic Citizens choose representatives to pass laws and legislate for them Representatives may govern for a set period of time or for life
