Speaker Design: Function Design and Manufacture National 4 & 5

Function What does it mean? The function of a product is what operation the product must perform and how it does this. How well a product functions is crucial to its success but designers must balance this with other factors such as aesthetics and production considerations.

Function Functional Considerations What is the primary function of a toaster? What are the secondary functions? What do you need to consider in order for a toaster to function effectively? Primary function of a toaster is to heat bread until the bread becomes hot and crunchy. Secondary functions are other functions that it can perform that are secondary to it just heating bread. These include; a thermostat that enables the bread to be heated to different degrees, a display to show what setting it is on, a defrost setting. Considerations: Has to be stable, the correct size to store the bread whilst it is toasted, method of lowering bread beside heating elements.

Function How does a speaker work? www.bbc.co.uk/how -does-a-loudspeaker-work We can now make a simple speaker unit out of some basic materials. Working in your groups, follow your teacher’s instructions to build a speaker of your own.

Function Functional Considerations Now you need to consider the functional requirements of your design that will integrate the loudspeaker unit. You will need to consider the following: What product will you integrate your loudspeaker into? How will it be operated? What controls will it need? How will it be powered? What are the main components needed for it to operate? Present your findings on an A3 sheet of paper in the form of text and graphics i.e. Internet images, diagrams, sketches etc
