Numeracy and Maths at Duns Primary School Curriculum Morning Thursday 4th May 2017

School Improvement Plan Raise attainment in Numeracy and Maths across all stages of the school. Progression in Numeracy from P1-P7. Ensure that lessons were engaging and active for all pupils.

Our Approach Our Learning and Teaching in Numeracy and Maths is based on SEAL. SEAL stands for Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning. It provides a framework that helps profile an individual's numerical knowledge and offers clear guidance in teaching approaches that nurtures their understanding.

Number Counts Clear progression starting at phase 1 to phase 7 Structured teaching opportunities. Which focus on numerals, number recognition, the four basic operations and number structures. Providing activities that provide breadth, depth and challenge. Problem solving activities.

Domino and Random Patterns Counting collections…. screened and unscreened Forward and Backward Number Partitioning and Combining Number Counts Number before and Number After Finger Patterns Numeral Sequences Identifying Numerals Counting strategies

Why this approach? We feel that our children are able to use many different strategies to help them find the answers to questions. They can explain the strategies that they use and give reasons for their answers. They can make connections across different areas of learning.

Early Level (Nursery – P1)

Perceptual Counting 21 13 Typical Early Level Activities 12 14 19 18 20 15 16 17 16 20 18 15 19 17 Sequencing Numerals Can you put these numbers in the correct order, starting with the smallest?

Mathletics One of the resources that we use at Second Level (P5-P7) is Mathletics. Mathletics allows children to take part in online challenges where they can compete against players around the world. There are also opportunities for them to take part in activities where they can continue to develop their skills. Homework activities are set and children can access this resource from home.

How can you help at home?
