What is Formative Assessment? Formative assessment is a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve students’ achievement of intended instructional outcomes. Formative assessment is a process rather than a product. It is used during instruction rather than at the end of instruction. It involves teachers, but most importantly, it involves students! The Power of Formative Assessments in the Classroom Immediate feedback to students regarding their learning Immediate feedback to the teacher to determine whether re-teaching is needed The use of formative assessments and making data driven instructional decisions is part of the Executive and Teaching standards Formative assessments bridge teaching and learning!

Documentation is very important! Setting targets (or Criteria for Success) is very important Documentation (anecdotal notes for example) is part of the process Create a system to track the assessment results of each student. Include a section that will allow you to note changes to instruction you plan to make for individual, groups, or whole class based upon results. Also include a place to track reassessments for those students who may need remediation.

How do we go from “Presentation to Implementation”? Include “Formative Assessment Strategy” in lesson plans to be sure teachers are using them daily District and school teams meet regularly to monitor progress Sustain the focus over time Monitor the use of formatives in schools and classrooms Have Intervention/ Enrichment time built into your schedule
