Implementation & Results Senior Project – Computer Engineering 2017 SAE Aero Telemetry System Catherine Kanama Advisor – Prof. Cotter Abstract The SAE Aero Advanced Class Competition involves designing and building a cargo plane to simulate remotely dropping “humanitarian aid packages” onto a target zone from 100ft. The telemetry system monitors the altitude, acceleration, speed, and location data which provide information on aircraft performance. The system also increases package dropping accuracy by providing target viewing from an on board camera. Design & Requirements Implementation & Results First Person View Transmitter: AKK 5.8GHz TS832 Receiver: AKK 5.8GHz RC832 Camera: CrazyPony Wide Angle Camera Video Converter: EasyCap USB Stick First Person View Requirements Transmit live video from the plane to the ground station Video must be transmitted at any frequency other than 2.4GHz Data Acquisition System Requirements Transmit altitude data from the plane to the ground wirelessly Altitude must be measured with a precision of at least 1ft Display altitude, airspeed and GPS tracking data Data Acquisition System Microcontroller: Arduino Uno Tx/Rx: XBee Pro 900 MHz Airspeed: EagleTree Airspeed Microsensor V3 Altitude: SparkFun Pressure/Altimeter Sensor Future Work Use an Arduino Mini Pro to reduce the size of the DAS Implement the fuel monitoring system using an in-line liquid flow meter to increase fuel flow rate accuracy
