Why are people taking this course? Because you are interested in the subject Because it is required to graduate It was the only thing that fit in your schedule I’m just here for fun ??

Self - Disclosure There are 4 skills associated with self-disclosure: Defining yourself Knowing yourself Getting acquainted with others Developing Intimacy The revealing of the inner self. Why is this important? Self-Disclosure is a critical part of building a new relationship. The process of meeting and becoming close with someone new depends on how much of themselves each person is willing to share. The greatest risk of self-disclosure is being rejected: either not being liked or accepted.

Self-Disclosure Important Everything personal we say or do in this class room needs to remain confidential. Due to the experiential nature of this class, some people may choose to share things that they don’t want repeated outside this class. For the respect of everyone, don’t repeat what other people share.

Advantages of Self Disclosure 1. Improves Relationships 2. Promotes Mental Health 3. Self-Validation 4. Social Control 5. Impression Management

The Johari Window is a tool for explaining communication. The size of each windowpane varies depending on your communication ability and the quality of your relationship.

Loneliness

Relationships Relationships need to provide two things in order to prevent loneliness: 1. Emotional Attachments 2. Social Ties 3. How do you satisfy those needs?

The Fear of Getting Acquainted: Shyness Why do so many people fear this process? Meeting people and forming relationships should be fun, but for so many people it’s a difficult process, full of stress and anxiety. Why? Am I shy? What is shyness?
