Roles in an Ecosystem?

Review: What are the characteristics of living things? 1.) Needs and Uses Energy to 2.) Grows and Develops 3.) Responds to Their Environment 4.) Reproduces 5.) Made of one or more cells 6.) Adapts to their surroundings to survive.

What do all living organisms need to survive?

What do all living organisms need to survive? ENERGY

Where does it come from?

Where does it come from? The Sun

What organisms use the sun’s light energy?

What organisms use the sun’s light energy? Producers

What is the role of a producer in an ecosystem? Produces or makes their own food Producers do this through the process of photosynthesis which uses the sun’s light energy to make food and oxygen.

How do other organisms get energy to survive?

How do other organisms get energy to survive? Organisms that cannot make their own food eat plants and/or animals to survive. They are called consumers

FOUR TYPES OF CONSUMERS: herbivore carnivore omnivore scavenger

What organism gets energy from plants? herbivore

What is the role of an herbivore in an ecosystem? a consumer that only eats plants to get energy to grow, develop, and survive.

EXAMPLES OF HERBIVORES grasshopper cow parrot giraffe moose bee deer rabbit

What organism gets energy from animals only? carnivores

What is the role of a carnivore in an ecosystem? a consumer that only eats other animals to get energy to grow, develop, and survive.

EXAMPLES OF CARNIVORES wolf alligator dragonfly owl spider penguin preying mantis seal lion

What organism gets energy from both plants and animals? omnivores

What is the role of an omnivore in an ecosystem? consumers that eat both- other animals and plants to get energy to grow, develop, and survive.

bear pig squirrel chicken human mouse robin skunk EXAMPLES OF OMNIVORES bear pig squirrel chicken human mouse robin skunk

What organism gets energy from dead animals they did not kill? scavengers

What is the role of a scavenger in an ecosystem? consumers (carnivores) that eat dead or decaying animals to get energy to grow, develop, and survive.

EXAMPLES OF SCAVENGERS hyena crow vulture crab maggots catfish rat fly

How do other organisms get energy to survive? Organisms that break down the matter from dead plants and animals, waste products, and recycle this matter into nutrients that are released back into the soil. They are called decomposers

What is the role of a decomposer in an ecosystem? They get energy from decaying matter - dead plants and animals As they eat, they release nutrients and minerals back into the soil, which will be used by plants as they grow and develop.

EXAMPLES OF DECOMPOSERS fungi- like mushrooms earthworms vulture ants bacteria beetle clam slug
