To Do- Make a team of at least 3 people. There is a maximum of 5 teams. Pick up your jurisdiction cards. Pick a captain

The Rules.. You will be given a legal situation and asked to identify what jurisdiction (the court) in which that case will be heard. After each situation you will have 15 seconds to select the jurisdiction. Place it face down on your desk.

The Rules.. In turn you will be asked to show your jurisdiction. Correct jurisdiction will get you 1 point. For an additional 3 points you try to explain why that case is in that particular jurisdiction. If you get the jurisdiction wrong you get no points and we move to the next team.

The Rules.. If the team gets the jurisdiction write but chooses not to explain why or get the explanation of the jurisdiction wrong we will go in order until a team gets it right or all teams have gone. Teams MAY switch their jurisdiction cards after the first team goes For example..

Situation 1 Jon and Sarah go on Vacation to Guam (a U.S. territory) at the airport Jon makes a joke about hijacking the plane. The security guard (a federal employee) asks him to explain what he said. Jon refuses and pushes the security guard.

Situation 2 Juana is arrested for attempted murder of her boyfriend Dave. Dave works as a mail carrier for the US Post Office. Juana tried to blow up Dave’s apartment (with him in it) by leaving the gas stove on.

Situation 3 • Lisa is convicted of growing marijuana in her house. The police acting on an unusually high electric bill set up heat sensing equipment from outside the house to search for heat signatures that would reveal heat lamps inside. The police used this as just cause to search and locate Lisa’s marijuana growing operation inside. The State court of appeals and the State Supreme Court have affirmed the trial courts decision.

Situation 4 John is arrested as a terrorist and found guilty at trial. The basis of his conviction was the testimony of a captured terrorist who went to school with John and had undergone a series of torture treatments by US government officials.

Situation 5 Hamish leaves Illinois and travels with his friends Ian and Trevor to Las Vegas. When they get to Las Vegas they loose all of their money. In order to get enough money to get home they rob a liquor store and return to Illinois. When they get back to Illinois they are arrested by Illinois State police.

Situation 6 A group of high school students are expelled from school for posting pages on the school web site’s “Open Forum” page that protest the war in Iraq and include links to other web sites that have content protesting the president. The student’s parents sue the school to have the expulsions reversed

Situation 7 Knute, a resident of Minnesota is stopped by MN state police for speeding just after returning from Canada. The police tell Knute to get out of the car as they search it. They find illegal prescription drugs in his suitcase stored in his trunk. This evidence is used to convict him for possession of illegal prescription drugs.

Situation 8 While camping in Big Bend National Park, Romeo and his group of 5 friends start shooting at cans with their legally registered hand guns. Romeo misses a shot and the bullet hits a camper camped several sites away. The camper dies.

Situation 9 James, an angry young man has written several letters to a local television station demanding that they give him air time to discuss his reasons why he believes that “9/11” was a conspiracy. He warns that if they don’t he will blow up their station.

Situation 10 Bojan is found guilty of 3 counts of 1st degree murder in the city of Bloomington, Indiana. A major piece of evidence was his videotaped confession in which he appears with a black eye, bleeding nose, and busted lip. Bojan insists that the police beat him until he confessed.
