Total Health Dimensions of Health Purpose Financial Social Emotional Physical Personal Community Workplace Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Health impacts us as a person, an employee and a member of our community. Health is a resource for everyday life, not the object of living, and is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources as well as physical capabilities. Health is a fundamental human right, recognized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). It is also an essential component of development, vital to a nation's economic growth and internal stability. “…Health does not just mean the physical well-being of the individual but refers to the social, emotional, spiritual and cultural well-being of the whole community. Purpose is a key element of our total health. It embodies who we are, what we love. It’s driven by passion, culture, spirituality. If we have purpose, we are whole.

Purpose n. the reason for which something exists or is done, made, used an intended or desired result; end; aim; goal determination; resoluteness

Finding Your Purpose Personal Work Community What do I love? What drives me? Be the BEST me Work Skills & Abilities? Business need? Drive to Mastery Community What’s my passion? Who needs help? Take Action Purpose relates to us as individuals, the work we do and the community in which we live. Purpose is not a destination, rather a journey. Dynamic vs. static. Culture and spirituality part of this as well. “What defines me”. Note to speaker: Use your own pictures in each area.

Seven Principles of Purpose Resilience – Overcome and bounce back from stress, negativity, failure Passion – Being honest with ourselves. What do I truly love? Motivation – The reason/s I want to do something. The Why? Vulnerability – Facing fears and being okay with mistakes Altruism – Having a sense of wanting to help. My cause. Action – Moving beyond thinking. Taking the first step. Trying. Legacy – How do I want to be remembered? What am I leaving behind?

Be the Best You The Concept of Actualization Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need. Self Actualization is the pinnacle. It’s reaching our full potential and being the best person we can be. (defined on next slide) Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need (1948)

Self-Actualization Occurs when basic needs are met Desire for self-fulfillment; reaching full potential Life is a journey, not a destination Discovery and a need for growth is present throughout a person’s life Marked by high sense of morality, reality, honesty Actualization will vary among people, based on unique desires, motivation, purpose Can be defined by culture, spirituality

The Importance of Giving Back Part of actualization and purpose is a willingness and ability to help others – Altruism* Volunteering benefits both ourselves and our communities Brings a sense of worth and belonging Gives us perspective, insight Link between volunteering and health Research shows correlation between altruism and sense of purpose/life meaning (Journal of Positive Psychology; Van Tongeren; June 2015: Prosociality enhances meaning in life) Prosocial behavior - Voluntary behavior intended to benefit another

How Do I Know if it’s Right for Me? Giving Back How Do I Know if it’s Right for Me?
