Assessment system Years 10 and 11

Overview With the removal of the National Curriculum levels at KS2 and KS3 and the GCSE reforms we have decided to introduce a new assessment system. In Years 10 and 11 students are given end of Year 11 Target Grades 9-1 or A*-G, depending on the subject. From September 2017 all subjects will use grades 9-1. Each year group has three formal assessments each year. The assessments are quality assured exam papers with mark schemes and grade boundaries. Teachers use the assessments to give end of Year 11 Predicted Grades. We use the terms Exceeding, Meeting and Developing to compare the Predicted Grades with the Target Grades. Teachers give Attitude To Learning scores for each subject (3=Excellent, 2=Good, 1=Coasting and 0=Unacceptable). Parents/carers will receive three Progress Reports each year. All Progress Reports contain the assessment data. One of the reports has written comments from staff. The following slides give more details about this assessment system.

Target Grades and Predicted Grades We use KS2 data to decide on a Target Grade for each subject. We use FFTAspire software to generate the Target Grades. The Target Grades are based on the grades achieved by the top 20% of students with similar KS2 data. After each assessment teachers will give a Predicted Grade for each subject. The Predicted Grade is an indication of the grade the student may achieve in that subject by the end of the course in Year 11. The Predicted Grade is compared to the Target Grade using the terms Exceeding, Meeting and Developing (EMD) . Developing indicates that a student is not yet showing the knowledge and skills yet to achieve the Target Grade. Predicted Grades can go up and down. Teachers will track the progress of each student.

Progress Reports There are three formal assessments for each year group each year. Each set of assessments take place over one week. The assessment weeks are calendared. After each assessment parents/carers will receive a Progress Report. Each Progress Report will show the assessment data. One of the Progress Reports will have written comments from teachers. The written comments identify what students can do and next steps to make further progress. Students will also be given Attitude To Learning (ATL) scores for each subject, 3=Excellent, 2=Good, 1=Coasting, 0=Unacceptable ATL scores are based on effort and attitude and not academic progress. All students should be able to achieve scores of 2 and 3.
