Industrial involvement in EU funded programs: the PACMAN project Hélène MAINAUD DURAND

PACMAN = a study on Particle Accelerator Components’ Metrology and Alignment to the Nanometre scale It is an Innovative Doctoral Program, hosted by CERN, funded by EU and CLIC, providing training to 10 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs). Introduction Total EU contribution: 2.67 M€ Start-end dates: 01/09/2013-31/08/2017 17 academic & industrial partners Status of the ESRs: 7 have found a job (1 is Dr) 4 have been extended 8 are finalizing their PhD thesis CLIC budget: 1.6 MCHF PACMAN: intro & industrial partners Involvement: around ESRs Involvement: around the project

Introduction Management team Supervisory Board CERN, HEXAGON METROLOGY, ETALON, ELTOS, METROLAB, DMP, SIGMAPHI, NI PISA univ., CRANFIELD, SANNIO univ., LAPP, ETHZ, IFIC, SYMME, Tech. Univ. of Liberec Management team WP0 Management H. Mainaud Durand WP5 Training N. Catalan Lasheras WP6 Diss & Outreach M. Modena WP1 Metrology & Alignment H. Mainaud Durand WP2 Magnetic Measurements S. Russenschuck WP3 Precision mech. & nano-positioning M. Modena WP4 Microwave Technology M. Wendt

Propose an alternative solution for the high accuracy alignment of the accelerator components: using a stretched wire acting as a beam for the fiducialisation of components. combining references & methods of measurements in the same place to gain time and accuracy To get this: develop very high accuracy metrology and alignment tools Validate them on a final bench: the Final PACMAN Alignment Bench Extrapolate tools & methods developed to other projects Objectives

PACMAN industrial partners

PACMAN industrial partners 3 large companies: National Instrument (HU): Since 1976, National Instruments (NI) takes off-the-shelf semiconductor and computing technology and applies it to control, measurement and automation applications Hexagon Metrology (DE): Hexagon metrology offers a wide range of products and services for all industrial metrology applications in sectors such as automative, aerospace, energy and medical. Hexagon Metrology at Wetzlar is also where the development and manufacture of Leitz Brand high precision CMM, gear inspection systems and probe heads take place. TNO (NL): TNO Delft, with around 200 people in the field of high-end instrumentation, delivers innovative and complete solutions for large companies, SME’s and governmental organisations. TNO fields of knowledge are: applied physics, mechanics, material and process technology, instrumentation, electronics and information science. PACMAN industrial partners

PACMAN industrial partners 5 SMEs: DMP (ES): Specialized in the manufacture of highly complex dynamic systems and components for aeronautic, defence and space, medicine, science and other markets ELTOS (IT): manufactures and supplies printed circuit boards for original equipment manufacturer customers and their electronic manufacturing service providers. ETALON (DE): ETALON offers high end system solutions for the calibration, monitoring and accuracy enhancement of machines, robots and structures. It was founded in 2004 as a spin-off of the PTB in Germany, METROLAB (CH): Metrolab is a world leader for instruments to measure magnetic field strength with a very high degree of precision. SIGMAPHI (FR): Sigmaphi has been making magnetic systems for particle accelerators for more than 25 years, and supply them all around the world (more than 80% is exported) PACMAN industrial partners

Industrial involvement around the ESRs Recruitment: All the industrial partners received the short list of the 5 last candidates for the post offer in which they were concerned; they could provide comments before and after the board They had to acknowledge the candidate chosen Secondments: ESRs have a mandatory 3 months secondments in industry Objective of secondments: have a better knowledge of the industrial world, e.g. to learn how to define requirements, prepare and perform review and approval of an engineering design in order to develop prototypes, embedded in the teams of large industries and SMEs. Role of industrial companies: education, training, coaching Bonus: get high-skilled ESR to work, paid by EC. Industrial involvement around the ESRs

Industrial involvement around the ESRs Table of secondments: Industrial involvement around the ESRs ESR Duration Partner ESR1.1 2 months Hexagon ESR1.2 3 months Etalon ESR2.1 Sigmaphi 1 months NI ESR2.2 ELTOS ESR3.1 4 months DMP ESR3.2 ESR3.3 TNO ESR4.1 ESR4.2

Some conclusions from the secondments reports

Industrial involvement around the project Around the workshops/events organized by the project: IP workshop PACMAN workshops (through talks, sessions, etc.) “Talent speed dating” organized in the 3rd PACMAN workshop Dissemination and outreach activities Demos and trainings for all the students This involvement did not concern only PACMAN industrial partners, but also other companies as well: Terabee, Guralp, ASML, METAS, MI-Partners, INSPHERE. http://pacman.web.cern.ch/ Networking Sponsoring Advertising & exposure

Industrial involvement in pictures Presentation from MI-Partners 3rd Supervisory Board Conference EUSPEN 2016 External KT Network meeting

Industrial feedback from final poll Feedback from poll organized at the end of the project: 5 companies out of 8 answered (62.5%). Workload as an industrial partner: was the balance positive or has the experience been too demanding? Appropriateness of the secondments duration: 8.4/10 Rate of the adaptability of the students profile for industries: 8.2/10 Are you willing to join another ITN in the future?

Summary PACMAN = golden opportunity For students For partners Exposure to leading edge technology Multidisciplinary & multi-cultural environment Work with large network of industries & universities High quality training & outreach activities Summary For partners Get trained manpower during the secondment Develop synergies with other partners Attract international researchers to strengthen their team For the CLIC project: To push technologies and methods to improve the alignment of the CLIC components, which is a critical challenge for the project. To have a network of industries in order to provide solutions for the future, towards a CLIC future approval
