What, When & Why The United Nations is an organization dedicated to maintaining the peace and security of 51 countries. It also creates friendly relationships between nations, tries to give better living standards and human rights. The United Nations was established on October 24, 1945. It’s main goal is to peace keep around the world.

UN Branches The security council is the main branch and it holds the responsibility for providing peace and security. It also holds the authorization of military action.

Veto Power There are 5 veto members; China, France, Russia, United States and the United Kingdom. Being a veto member means that you can overrule the adoption of a proposal even if it has enough votes to go through.

The General Assembly This is where all the important questions are voted upon. The main questions are; recommendations on peace and security; election of members to organs, admission, suspension, and expulsion of members, and, budget matters.

Current Missions United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti & United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Secretary General The current secretary general is Ban Ki-moon of South Korea, he has been the general since January 2007.

My Opinion I believe that the United Nations is an effective organization because they help keep peace among the world. They discuss and come up with solutions to help maintain peace and security around the world. It is not effective however in preventing or stopping wars.
