EMT/ First Responder By: Hunter Warren

First call The average EMT/ First Responder will be at there base until the first call comes through. Once the first call comes through they will get in the truck and roll to the scene.

5 things to think about before you get on scene While going to a call you will have a million different thoughts going through your mind. Some of your thoughts are: Is the patient really sick or faking? Is this a setup for us to get hurt? Can we save them? How are we going to move the patient? Are we going to need backup?

Once you are on scene Once you are on scene the first thing you are going to do are: 1. Ask the patient where he/she is hurt. 2. Check to see if there is anything in your way. 3. Check the vital signs of patient. 4. Try to secure the patient on the backboard. 5. Place them on gurney. 6. Transport them safely.

Tasks for an EMT Responsibilities of an EMT will vary. An EMT on duty will: Will receive calls Will respond quickly and safely Help the public as needed

Work Conditions Work conditions for an EMT will be hard. They will work in rain, snow, sleet, and hot weather. Almost every EMT will work with a First Responder, Firefighter, Police Officers, and sometimes even the public. An EMT may travel 500 miles a day, and some may not drive 50 miles. It all depends on how many calls you will receive.

Salary of an EMT The average salary of an EMT is around $31,000.00/per year. However, the pay will vary by which state and county you live in. Some counties pay more than others. You might make $30,000.00 in Oregon county, and if you transfer to Shannon County, you may only make $25,000.00

Certifications for an EMT EMT Basic Training - 100 Hours EMT Intermediate Training - 30 to 350 Hours EMT Paramedic Training – 2 Years Once you have taken these courses you will take the Missouri Test of EMT, and once you pass that test you will be a certified EMT.

Personality you need to be an EMT You need to have a good personality to be an EMT, but you also don’t have to put up with anybody's business. I am a First Responder, and I personally don’t tolerate people that need an ambulance because there leg is hurting. If the call is serious we need to handle it but if it isn't, then we don’t need to worry about it

Personality you need to be an EMT You need to have patience with some of your patients, even though your patience will more than likely run out real quick. To be an EMT some of your calls will be so ignorant you don’t even know why you came, but you came to help the public. You also will need to have a heart for the job. You can’t get attached to your patients.
