Law Enforcement

Local Law Enforcement Police Department—Law enforcement group for a city or town (municipality). The police have jurisdiction inside the city limits. Who is the head of the police Dept? How do they get their job? What are some of the duties of the police? Sheriff’s Department—Law enforcement group for a county. The sheriff’s dept has jurisdiction anywhere in the county. (Usually assigns Bailiffs to courtrooms) Who is the head of the Sheriff’s Dept? How do they get their job? What are some of the duties of the Sheriff’s Dept?

State Law Enforcement State Highway Patrol—(also called State Troopers) Responsible for patrolling state highways & interstates. And for enforcing NC automobile laws. State Bureau of Investigation (SBI)—Assists local law enforcement with major cases and investigates wrongdoing inside local law enforcement departments.

Federal Law Enforcement Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)—Enforces federal laws and protects the US from terrorist attack.  U. S. Secret Service—Protects the President and government officials. Also investigates counterfeiting and other crimes.

Executive Agencies/Commissions Federal Agencies- responsible for enforcing their own laws and codes. Many are overseen directly by a Presidential cabinet member. Examples: FDA, DEA, ATF

Enforcing Punishment Corrections Officers- Inside jails and prisons, COs are responsible for maintain order and enforcing regulations Make sure inmates follow rules, supervise daily activities of inmates Local, state and federal prisons, local jails

In Schools School Resource Officer- sworn law enforcement official assigned to prevent crime in public schools Assigned by municipality In Cabarrus County- CPD & Sheriff’s Dept Not required in all states, counties Cabarrus County has one in each school, as of this past school year
