Unusual periparturient complications in camels (Camelus dromedrius) Ahmed Ali; Derar R Derar, Fahd Al-Sobayil, Ali Alsamari Department of Veterinary Medicine, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Buraydah, Qassim, Saudi Arabia The 32th meeting of the Saudi Biological Society Makkah Al- Mukarramah, Saudi Arabia April 18–20, 2017 Introduction The aim of this study was to present and document some unusual periparturient complications observed in female dromedary camels. Materials and Methods Five female camels with unusual periparturient complications were examined and described at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Qassim University. Results The five unusual periparturient cases exhibited (1) prepartum vaginal tearing followed by complete uterine dislocation, (2) parturient vaginal rupture and passage of the fetus through the torn vagina, (3) parturient uterine prolapse followed by uterine tearing and passing the fetus and intestine through the torn uterus, (4) postpartum vaginal rupture followed by dislocation of the uterus and intestine, and (5) postpartum uterine prolapse complicated with uterine tearing and dislocation of the intestinal loops. Figure 1. Pre-partum vaginal tearing followed by complete uterine dislocation Figure 2. Parturient vaginal rupture and passing the fetus through the torn vagina Figure 3. Parturient uterine prolapse followed by uterine tearing and appearance of the fetal legs and intestine through the torn uterus Figure 5. Postpartum uterine prolapse complicated with uterine tearing and dislocation of the intestinal loops. Figure 4. Post-partum vaginal tearing followed by dislocation of the uterus Discussion The common remark in most observed cases was the periparturient tearing or rupture of the vaginal wall followed by prolapse or dislocation of the uterus and / or the intestine. The probable causes of vaginal rupture and evisceration are tenesmus, trauma due to the oversized fetuses, narrow cervix and uterine torsion. Conclusion: to our knowledge, this is the first report documents unusual periparturient complications in dromedary camels. Vaginal tearing has serious complications on female camels that necessities prompt intervention. Clinical relevance exceptional attention should be paid for female camels during late pregnant, at and shortly after parturition. Camels with such complications should be managed as early as possible.
