Written by Paul in the early fifties to the church in Thessalonica a few months after he had penned 1 Thessalonians Both letters were written from the same place Paul wrote the first letter to tell them they had not missed the rapture! He now writes assuring them they were not enduring the great tribulation! For its size, 2 Thessalonians has more about the antichrist than any other book in the Bible Practically every major doctrine in the catalogue of faith is represented in these two small epistles (I & II Thessalonians)

Chapter 1 – Correction Concerning Persecution Vs. 1 “Paul” - Paul was a native of Tarsus, a city of Cilicia (Acts 21:39; 22:3) He was (1) a Roman citizen; (2) a Tarsian, a citizen of no humble city; (3) a Hebrew; and (4) a Pharisee “Silvanus” – Silas. This name is evidently a contracted form of Silvanus (sylvan), a prominent member of the church in Jerusalem (Acts 15:22) Upon the separation of Paul and Barnabas, Silas was selected by Paul as the companion of his second missionary journey (Acts 15:40) “Timothy” - (“venerating God”). The convert and friend of Paul

Chapter 1 – Correction Concerning Persecution Vs. 2 “Grace” – charis (G5485) – favor; grace; kindness “Peace” – eirēnē (G1515) – peace; peace of mind; wholeness, i.e., when all essential parts are joined together; God’s gift of wholeness; harmony “From” – from the source of.

Chapter 1 – Correction Concerning Persecution Vs. 3 “We are bound” – we owe a debt “To give thanks” – pres. act. inf. of eucharisteō (G2168) – to be thankful; properly, acknowledging that God’s grace works well (i.e. for our eternal gain & His glory) “Faith” – It is ridiculous to trust God for eternal things & to not trust Him for temporal things “Grows exceedingly” – pres. act. ind. of huperauxanō (G5232) – to increase beyond measure. Cf. Rom. 5:3, 4 “Love” – Sometimes in our churches there is little evidence of heresy, but there is also little evidence of love for the brethren. Cf. Jn. 13:34 & Rom. 5:5 “Abounds” – pres. act. ind. of pleonadzō (G4121) – to superabound; to overspread as a fire or a flood

Chapter 1 – Correction Concerning Persecution Vs. 4 “Patience” – hupomonē (G5281) - to remain under Deals with circumstance testing (cf. I Cor. 13:7) Cf. Rom. 5:3, 4; 8:25 (“perseverance”), 15:4, 5 (“patience”), II Cor. 1:6 (“enduring”), II Cor. 6:4; Col. 1:11; I Thess. 1:3; II Thess. 3:5; I Tim. 6:11 (“patience”), Heb. 10:36; 12:1 (“endurance”), Jms. 1:3, 4 (“patience”), Jms. 5:11; II Pet. 1:6 (“perseverance”) People testing is makrothumei (G3114) “Endure” – pres. mid./pass. ind. of anechō (G430) - to hold up; to bear with; to show tolerance For the believer, it means living out the faith that God works in us Cf. Eph. 4:2 (“bearing”), Col. 3:13 (“bearing”), & Heb. 13:22 (“bear”)
