Getting to Know the imaging Equipment

Lecture Outline 5D Camera Overview Setting up the 5D and lens Lens and uses Setting up the 5D and lens How to Lens – Zoom 7D Camera and K2 Microscope Overview Uses Setting up the 7D and K2

Macro: The Canon 5D Digital Camera Best Uses: Specimens between ~1mm to ~50cm in length

Macro: The Canon 5D Digital Camera 50mm Lens Uses: Large Specimens Drawers Herbarium Sheets A ~10cm moth zoomed in 1to6.

Macro: The Canon 5D Digital Camera 100mm Lens Uses: Most insect specimens Pinned Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Odonata, Orthoptera, small-medium sized Lepidoptera, etc Best for any specimen sized between 1-10cm

Macro: The Canon 5D Digital Camera 65mm Lens Uses: specimens between 5mm and >1mm. Optional 1.4x teleconverter (increases zoom capability)

How to Set Up 5D Camera and Lenses

Step 1: Make sure extension is on lift* When not attached, top levers will be to the left. Press back of extension to carriage . When fully locked on, carriage lever will click to the right. *Note: This is only the case for the 5D camera. When using 7D/K2, extension must be off lift.

Step 2: Attach 5D camera to extension Press camera base to front of extension. Extension lever will click right when locked Once securely attached, remove bottom cap. Shouldn’t you remove the cap after you plug everything in?

Step 3: Plug in cables and Battery 2 Cables plug-in on right side of camera. Battery in back of camera on left. Push battery in until it clicks, then close battery door. To open battery door, pull lever on door to right.

Step 4: Attach lens to camera Pick up desired lens (carefully!) Remove top cap (one above red dot) Line lens up with camera by red dots.

Step 4, continued: Attach lens to camera Press lens up into camera and turn right until red dot is ~90o right and clicks into place. Once firmly in place, remove bottom lens cap. 100mm and 50mm: Pinch cap sides 65mm: just pull off cap

Removing Lens Just reverse process (mostly) To release lens from camera, press side tab on right and turn lens left. The red dots will line up once again, and the lens will be released. Please be careful. Drop the lens = you die.

100mm Lens Zoom Zoom: Gold Ratios on lens 1:1-Highest Zoom -1:1 is for things close to the lens 1:5-Lowest Zoom -1:x is for things far away from the lens. Can be used for especially large specimens that are too big for the field of view of 1:1 magnification.

65mm Lens Zoom 1x (lowest zoom) to 5x (highest zoom)

Attaching 65mm 1.4x Teleconverter Remove top 1.4x lens cap, then top 65mm lens cap, then bottom 1.4x cap. Line up bottom of 1.4x with top of 65mm by red dots

Attaching 65mm 1.4x Teleconverter Twist to the right until you hear a click. 1.4x should be firmly attached to 65mm. Attach top of 1.4x teleconverter to camera as you would attach any other lens.

Micro: Canon 7D with Infinity K2 Long Distance Microscope Best Uses: Microscopic specimens (slides) or microscopic parts of specimens (ie stomata)

Micro: Canon 7D with Infinity K2 Long Distance Microscope Stomata on a pine needle taken with the K2 using SolMate. 2mm long flea taken with the K2 using SolMate.

Setting up the 7D-K2 ‘scope First make sure extension is off lift. It will not work with the extension still attached! Before attaching 7D-K2 to lift, insert battery (hold camera firmly with right hand and put in battery with left hand)

Setting up the 7D-K2 ‘scope Once battery is in camera, attach camera to lift same as with the 5D (lever will click to right when in place) Attach cables

Setting up the 7D-K2 ‘scope Tilt objective to empty top covering into hand. “After unscrewing, tilt the objective so that the covering falls gently into your hand.”? Um, what?

Setting up the 7D-K2 ‘scope Remove orange cap by pulling off (it’s very high-tech) Select desired objective (CF2, CF3, CF4, 5x or 10x) Loosen dial on objective

Setting up the 7D-K2 ‘scope Fix top of objective to base of K2 Tighten side dial to secure objective on K2 Remove bottom cap (same as orange from before)

How to choose an objective size for K2
