Today we are going to talk about… Counselors – Who are we? Daily Schedule Courses Registration Cards Lockers Planners Student Activities/Clubs/Sports School Spirit Questions

What Does a Counselor Do? Helps students when they have scheduling questions, problems, or changes. Helps students work out problems with school, friends, or personal matters. Makes classroom presentations about making good choices, staying organized, career exploration, and on other topics.

A counselor is someone you can talk to!  

Typical Day Start 7:30 a.m. – End 2:27 p.m. 6 periods (about 58 minutes each) Homeroom 7:30-7:40 1st hour 7:45-8:43 2nd hour 8:48-9:46 3rd hour 9:51-10:49 4th hour 10:54-11:51 Lunch (30 min) 11:53-12:23 5th hour 12:28-1:25 6th hour 1:30-2:27 5 minutes passing time between classes

Let’s Talk About Classes Four class periods of core academics + Two class periods of electives = Six class periods

Every 6th grade student will have: REQUIRED Classes Every 6th grade student will have: A Language Arts class all year, a Math class all year, a Science class all year, and a World Studies class all year Plus required electives……

Music Each 6th grader is required to take a year long music class. Your choices are Instrumental Music or Vocal Music.

Instrumental Music Brass Percussion Learn how to play an instrument The Basics: Learn how to play an instrument Types of instruments to choose from: Woodwind Brass Percussion

Vocal Music The Basics: Singing and rhythm Pitch & projection Tone quality Performance

Physical Education Students are also required to take a 20 week (half-year) Physical Education class.

Elective Classes Students may choose one elective class to complete their schedule. The elective classes are each 20 weeks long (half-year). The choices include: Art Global Digital Leadership S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math)

ART 6 The Basics: Learn about color, elements of art and design Draw, paint, work with clay, glazing, print-making, etc

Global Digital Leadership The Basics: Technology class with leadership activities, team building, goal setting 3-D printing, Google Cardboard (virtual reality), iPads, iMovie, coding, Makey Makey video game controllers, website creation, stop-motion videos, Prezi Community partnerships with local businesses

S.T.E.M. The Basics: Working with concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Activities in the areas of robotics, coding, building structures, design, problem solving.

Lockers Your locker is your personal space where you keep your things (coat, backpack, books, etc) You will get assigned a locker and combination at registration in the summer Opening your locker takes a little practice, but you’ll get the hang of it very quickly! ALWAYS keep your locker combination PRIVATE!

Your Planner You will use your planner every day! You will be given a new planner each year. What should I write in it? What was covered in class Homework that is assigned Upcoming test/quiz dates Project due dates You will use your planner every day!

STUDENT ACTIVITES - - GET INVOLVED!!! Student council After school activities/dances Clubs Intramurals Performances Interscholastic Sports in 7th/8th Grade

EXAMPLES OF CLUBS Anchors Book Club Chess Ecology Mathcounts PTSA super students Science Olympiad Ski and Snowboard club Yearbook EXAMPLES OF INTRAMURALS Maker Space (coding) Archery Running Dodge Ball Basketball Jazz Band Board games Knitting Many more as they become available.

VIKING SPIRIT How to Show VH colors are BLACK & WHITE Spirit wear (t-shirts, hoodies, etc) can be ordered at registration Student council sponsors many spirit days throughout the year Support VH teams as a spectator Attend after school activities Get involved in clubs
