Presentation transcript:

Today you need pencil, notebook, WS from yesterday Learning target – I will be able to define density and calculate it. Question – What is an element? Finish your WS with shoulder partner. Assigned seats tomorrow. Absent yesterday? – pick up 2 WS in the back of the room.

Turn to a blank sheet in your notebook

Density can be used to help identify different types of matter. how many different types of matter are packed together. how much mass there is per unit of volume of a substance Imagine a cube, one cm tall, one cm wide, and one cm long. If that cube is filled with Styrofoam it is light. If it is filled with lead (Pb) it is heavy. The lead (Pb) is heavier because it has a higher density than Styrofoam.

Today you need pencil and notebook Learning target – I will be able to calculate density. Question - Is density a physical or chemical property of matter? Explain Why?

Calculating Density Formula for density: Density (D) = Mass (M) / Volume (V) Example: Find the density of an object whose mass is 10g and volume is 5 mL Answer: 2 g/mL Formula for mass: M = DV Formula for volume V = M / D

Solid substances will float on a liquid that has more density. Liquid substances that are less dense will float when mixed with substances that are more dense Solid substances will float on a liquid that has more density. Example: plastic on water (water has a higher density than plastic so the plastic floats)

Immiscible: Example: oil and water Liquids that are insoluble (don’t mix together) in one another. Example: oil and water When Immiscible substances are mixed they will settle out to form a density column. Immiscible:

Miscible: Liquids that are soluble (will mix together) Example: water and food coloring

You can tell if an object will sink, float, or suspend in water The density of water is 1 g/ml Sink – the density of the object will be more than the density of water Float- the density of the object will be less than the density of water Suspend- the density of the object is the same as the density of water

Video demo Math WS

Today you need a pencil and WS from front table Today you need a pencil and WS from front table. Turn in math practice WS now. Backpacks and all belongings to side counter. Learning Target – I will be able to predict the relative densities of certain objects and liquids. (write this at the top of your WS) Question – what is the formula for density? D = M / V

Happy Monday! Today you need a pencil, lab WS from Friday, notebook, calculator, and agenda. Backpacks and all belongings to side counter. Learning Target – I will be able to calculate the densities of certain objects. Question – what is the formula for density? D = M / V

Lab rules NO HORSEPLAY! NO THROWING ANYTHING! Stay in your seat unless you are getting supplies or cleaning up. If you choose to break the rules, you choose to go directly to ISI. The back of the lab WS is an assessment/test for physical properties and density.

Density rainbow - Challenge Problem students will create their own density columns using just sugar, water and food coloring.   The rainbow should be at least four colors.   Remind students that they need to put liquid into the test tube with the most dense first using a dropper.   Go slowly.
