camp “Cactus” 2009 Ternopil Preliminary proposal

Aims and goals Develop interest in community leadership and social projects Provide campers with basic training for carrying out small projects Prepare them for a possible next stage with a more prominent emphasis on projects Create a exciting, comfortable and relaxing environment that would aid opening up campers’ talents such as creativity and organizational skills as well as engaging them in the life of their community Spread IOC ideals to areas that have not had that opportunity by establishing local cells in 3 cities of Western Ukraine other than Ternopil Develop a network of people in the Western region willing to support each other and work together on projects

Name and nature of the camp Working name – Camp “CACTUS” (Community Action Camp Ternopil Ukrainian Style) Real name of the camp is to be decided by the staff The camp is an IOC-based project The camp is to develop interest and increase desire and ability to implement community projects.

Staff in general Staff is to be roughly half Ukrainian and half American, around 19 staff members total 2 team leaders per team and 8 teaching pairs with people responsible for organizing camp life and various events As it is a first year program it is essential to create an atmosphere of “ownership” of the camp amongst the staff members so everyone would be able to call it their own camp and not anybody else’s Each person would be able to have specific responsibilities according to their desires thus utilizing their talents and creating devotion, while not alienating different branches of activity (ex. team vs. teaching) Everyone would be encouraged and expected to contribute to the making of this program A core group is needed to find staff, organize venue and start working on curriculum/preliminary matters

PCV Staff Around 9 people – 6 team/teacher, 2 team/events, 1 editor/events, at least 4-5 from the new groups Most of the PCVs should come from Western Ukraine, at least one from each city where the out of town students come from and two from the Ternopil region PCVs should exhibit the following qualities: Relevant experience in teaching as well as project implementation Will to support students in their area with carrying out projects Enthusiasm for the project and determination to leave their mark on it

Ukrainian staff Around 8 people – 6 team/teacher, 2 teacher/events Ukrainian staff should also come predominantly from the western regions Ukrainian staff should exhibit the following: Some project experience Motivation to work with campers in the future and support them A proficient level of English Overall enthusiasm for the project and will to input their ideals
