How to use water responsibly and avoid waste Climate Action Week 16th-20th of October 2017 Saving Water How to use water responsibly and avoid waste

Uses of Water For drinking Washing ourselves, our clothing, dishes, cars and other items In cleaning food and in cooking Watering houseplants, poly tunnel plants etc. In heating systems In toilets and household appliances Giving water to animals-pets, cattle, sheep Swimming and other water based activities

But the Earth has lots of water, why should we save it? We must save water because….. 97% of the Earth’s water supply is salt water! We can’t drink it. 3% of the Earth’s water supply is fresh water. 2% of this fresh water is locked in ice caps and glaciers. Only 1% is available to humans, plants and animals And this 1% is in danger!

Pollution, Population and Climate change! Some people are polluting water by littering, being careless and putting things down toilets and drains that should not go down there! Our population is growing very quickly, there are 7 and ½ billion people on earth, we all need water! Pollution, Population and Climate change! Some people are still wasting energy and burning too much fuel. As a result our world is heating up quickly, causing some water to evaporate and other water sources to dry up, causing droughts. What is a drought?

Water Pollution and Drought Images Would you drink this water?

Saving water means that there will be water available if there are droughts or water shortages. Then these events will not cause as much trouble! Saving water means we will save money. It preserves our environment. It helps animal and plant life, and keeps our countryside looking beautiful. It also means there are water sources available for swimming, other water sports and recreational activities.

How can we save water? Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. Fill washing machines and dishwashers fully before using them. Only fill the kettle with the water you need. Use a sponge and a bucket of water when washing your car rather than a hose. Collect rain water to water your plants and to wash areas outside.

Place a basin in your kitchen sink and use the water collected to water plants. Have a shower instead of a bath. Check for any leaks and get them fixed! Don’t put anything down the toilet or sink that may cause a blockage. Place a Hippo bag in your toilet cistern to save water. Remind adults to save water too! Be Water Wise

In Scoil Naomh Pádraig we are trying to achieve our third Green Flag for water conservation. So far we have saved water by… Checking for leaks-no visible leaks found. Using Hippo bags to stop extra water being flushed away, we are saving three litres with every flush. Not using a hose to water plants. Placing basins in our sinks to collect our waste water, we use it to water the vegetables and plants in our poly tunnel. Turning off our taps. Only boiling the water we need. We will check our water meter over Halloween break to check for any other leaks We don’t waste water!

Be Water Wise Be a Water Warrior Our Green Schools Code Turn off the tap, don’t let it leak! Water, water everywhere, waste no water anywhere! Be Water Wise Be a Water Warrior

Watch, discuss and learn! The Green Schools committee will now demonstrate two Water Experiments to show how water is cleaned by filters and to remind us why wipes should not be flushed down our toilets or put down drains. Watch, discuss and learn!

Your toilet is not a bin! The nasty nine can cause river and marine pollution. Cotton Buds Cigarettes Baby Wipes Plasters Nappies Cleansing Pads Medicines Facial Wipes Toilet Roll Tubes Never flush these items!

Thank you for listening! Thank you Green Schools Committee Members for your assistance. Let’s keep saving water and get our third Green Flag!
