propaganda, recruitment, conscription, enlist ... Meaning? Links? Relevance?

Propaganda Definition: Propaganda is the distortion or selective use of information, to try to change people’s opinions and feelings. It is particularly common in times of war.

Conscription By 1916 it was clear that the need for soldiers was so great that a volunteer army was not enough, so the govt took action: Jan 1916 Military Service Act Conscription, all single men, aged 18-41 March 1916 Amended Include married men

Why did Wilf Smith join the Durham Light Infantry (the DLI)? History Mystery ... Why did Wilf Smith join the Durham Light Infantry (the DLI)?

The use of language is essential… We have… They have… Army, Navy, Air Forces A War Machine Press briefings Propaganda We… They… Take out Destroy Neutralise Kill Our boys are… Their boys are… Professional Brainwashed Resolute Ruthless Brave Fanatical Our missiles.. Their missiles… Are like Luke Skywalker zapping Darth Vader Are like ageing duds (rhymes with scuds!) Cause collateral damage Cause civilian casualties

Does this poster help us to explain why Wilf signed up? Does this poster tell us any other reasons why men signed up? HOMEWORK: Does this poster fully explain why young men joined up so eagerly in 1914? Consider other reasons why men joined up and think about the origin and purpose of this source

Homework ... choice 1. Source-based question using a poster And secondly, choice is either: 2. Research into conchies Who were these men? Why did they not enlist? What happened to them? 3. Researching the role of women in WW1
