Presentation transcript:

Aim: What happens during a change of state? Do Now: Describe what occurs during the water cycle.

Water’s Changes of States Precipitation: is any form of water that falls from a cloud. water vapor is the most important gas in the atmosphere.

Temperature: - is a measure of the average kinetic energy in a substance. (particle movement)

ESRT Page 13

Heat – the energy transferred from one object to another because of a difference in the objects’ temp.

Cover ESRT Specific heat: The amount of heat need to raise the temperature of a certain substance by One Degree Celsius.

Latent (or “hidden”) Heat: The heat that is needed to melt or vaporize a substance with no change in temperature.

* NO CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE DURING A PHASE CHANGE!!

Changes of State Makes no sense without caption in book

Phase Changes: Melting Solid  Liquid = (absorbs heat) Freezing Liquid  Solid = (releases heat) Evaporation Liquid  Gas

Condensation Gas  Liquid = (releases heat) Sublimation Solid  Gas = (absorbs heat) Deposition Gas  Solid

ESRT – Page 1

Closure: Please work to complete the handout on phase changes and states of matter. States of Matter
