A Check list of the situation Very few or no Projects at all to brag about No great offices to entertain your audience No history to verify your credibility claims No cash No audited accounts.

THE FUNDRAISING THEATRE: TRENDS ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE Increased public and media awareness of development issues and the various solutions Demands for increased transparency and proof of impact delivery Trends towards development partnerships, capacity building and donor co-ordination

THE FUNDRAISING THEATRE (Contd.) Indigenous Resources A small number of INGOs make up quite a large portion of the NGO flows to the South.

TYPES OF ORGANISATIONS community-based organisations (CBOs) - serve a specific population in a narrow geographic area in individual devg. ctries national organisations - which operate in individual developing countries. international organisations - typically headquartered in devd ctries & work in more than one developing country.

RESEARCH To optimise chances of achieving your aim To give you a basis for planning and making a strategy on how to proceed Should be professionally executed Should have specific objectives.

PLANNING Key to Fundraising Success SWOT analysis should help identify and combat your weaknesses, while leveraging your strengths. Need to put together FR goals & objectives and then block out an annual schedule. With a plan, you can see progress towards goal.

Management and Leadership 4 things associated with leadership -Ability to influence, prioritise,develop trust &motivate -There has to be followers or people going with you. -A leader has to have a vision -Ability to communicate effectively. Levels of leadership -Strategic Leader -Operational Leader -Team Leader

Branding and Communication Effective Communication attracts attention, interest, desire and provoke action. A strong brand helps your organisation image in the mind of stakeholders & donors Branding Tools -Positioning -Verbal Identity -Visual Identity

Creativity & Innovativeness Break the rules ! Think outside the box. Break new ground. Use positive happy approaches but not necessarily hiding the complex realities eg. Poverty.

Diversification of Approaches Other than just the traditional writing of proposals to International NGOs or donors, do something else. Earned income National Sources International Sources

Networking Develop and maintain contacts and personal connections. Advantages: -It helps you keep abreast of Industry trends & sources of technical expertise you can tap. -It facilitates exchange of ides. -It exposes you to important people like donors, Utilise all opportunities to network

Human Resource Should understand technique of fundraising and have intellectual & emotional connection with the organisation and its mission. Should be able to analyse the external & internal fundraising environment. Should be able to develop a RM strategy that integrates FR activities within the organisation’s strategic plan. Should be skilled at making Market and Competitor Analysis Should have qualities of a good fundraiser.

Donor Relations Be committed Have enough resources Be consistent Be quick Be personal Be visible Be available Be open and honest Be cheerful and helpful. Speak the language they want to hear Never forget to say thank you !

Stakeholder Involvement Know who your stakeholders are. Why are they interested in your organisation. Know roles of each category of stakeholder.

Credibility Issues The quality of being believable and trust worthy. Levels:- -Organistaional level -Leadership & Management level -Staff level -Program level Exercise: How would you build credibility for each of the above levels ? (15 minutes)

Conclusion Resource Mobilisation can be a challenge but it is possible . Others have done it and so can you.
