International Forum of Meteorological Societies IFMS The IFMS website Proposal of the IFMS-GM1 Working Group and current status Dominique Marbouty (EMS) Handzettel – rot für nein, grün für ja 1

Background IFMS-GM1 set up a working group to develop the logical structure and the content of an IFMS web site Composition of the WG: Fritz Neuwirth, European Meteorological Society, chair Walter Dabbert, American Meteorological Society Paul Hardaker, Royal Meteorological Society Emmanuel Rohinton, Glasgow CaledonianUniversity Mark D. Schwartz, University of Wisconsin Hans Volkert, International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences AMS offered to implement and maintain the website A structure was agreed and distributed on 6 August 2010 Part of it have been implemented. Current status is analysed hereafter 2

Map of the website, as proposed by the WG Home About IFMS Member Meteorological Societies News Organisation Throughout the document the following convention is used: Green = done, updated Orange = partially done Red = not done, empty 3

Map of the website – About IFMS Purpose and objective Short history, reasons for establishment of IFMS Basic document, term of reference Steering Committee (1) Committees Inventory of Meteorological Societies around the world Inventory of related Societies (1) The area exists but is not linked from here 4

Map of the website – Members (1/2) Member Meteorological Societies Short profile of the relevant society Established since Purpose, objectives Number of members Main activity Publications Reports Online resources Contact persons Link to homepage Only a list of member societies, with no specific information about each of them 5

Map of the website – Members (2/2) Societies related to Meteorology Short profile of the relevant society Established since Purpose, objectives Number of members Main activity Publications Reports Online resources Contact persons Link to homepage 6

Map of the website - News News from member societies News from international relevant meteorological organisations Conference calendar Jobs Titles only, nothing under each title 7

Map of the website - Organisation Planning meeting Global meetings IFMS-GM1 IFMS-GM2 Steering Committee Steering committee members Steering committee description Membership request 8

Thank you for your attention Discussion Do we want to develop the website ? How can we ensure this development happens ? Should we limit our ambition to what will be feasible ? Should it be mainly a collection of links, except for IFMS organisation itself ? Thank you for your attention 9

IFMS website - Conclusions Remove outdated or empty areas Collect list of all met societies Collect relevant info about societies (template, in English) Update website accordingly: basic info + link (AMS) 10 10

IFMS website – propose (11 Nov 2011, e-mail) 'Home' page: - is fine 'About' page: - I would suggest to remove the links to 'Short History' and 'Reasons for establishment of IFMS' as this is in fact addressed in the text 'Purpose and Objective' - Under 'Basic Documents' I would add a link to a page to be created to 'IFMS Charter'. This page would simply replicate the corresponding text that appears on the Home page - I would remove the link 'Committees' as there is no other committee than the Steering Committee - I would also add a link to a page 'Membership Request'  to be created (see below) 11 11

'Members' page - this will be updated with Lan's input 'Members' page - this will be updated with Lan's input. Each Member Society's name should be a link to a page where the basic information for that MS is provided, including a link to the MS's homepage - I would also add a link on the left of that page to 'Membership Request' 'News' page - I would simply remove the whole page altogether, including the mention of it on the top band for the whole website as we recognised in Xiamen that we probably cannot maintain such a page 'Organization' page - The part 'Membership Request' needs to be completed. It should include 1) A short text describing the conditions for membership: I suppose the text in the charter is fine (membership in the Forum will be voluntary and open to all national and regional meteorological and closely related professional/scientific societies) 2) the information to be provided when applying for membership (i.e. the template information to be provided by each member society) 3) where to apply. I would suggest that application be sent to the chair of the steering committee
