I. Introduction The College of Arts, Sciences & Education plays an important role in the University of Makati because it serves the General Education (GE) requirements of the degree and non-degree programs of the different colleges and centers of the university. General Education courses under the College of Arts, Sciences & Education has been expanding their parameters by promoting meaningful relationships among various disciplines. Curriculum in various General Education subjects like English, Mathematics, Social Sciences and the Humanities further aim to provide world class, learner-centered, and technology-mediated instruction that will meet the demands of the stakeholders.

II. Purpose In response to the University president’s suggestion during the last planning session, the General Education subjects will integrate basic computer skills in subjects like English, Mathematics, Social Sciences and the Humanities. Consistent with the goals of the General Education program, the CASE was charged with developing a technology competency assessment from “computer skills / competencies” to technology fluency. Technology Fluency is more than just an acquisition of basic computer skills. It encompasses the appropriate application of concepts and skills, promotes self-confidence and curiosity to generate questions and discover solutions and develop a predisposition for lifelong learning and continual adaptation.

Majority of students entering college today already possess the basic computer skills they need to cope with the demands of university life. Through the influx of technology and their exposure to a number of social networking sites, there is no longer a need for them to take up Basic Computer subjects. If they can use Facebook or Friendster, download and upload videos in YouTube, open their Yahoo Mail and chat with a friend, confidently and positively they already have equipped themselves with basic computer skills.

III. Project Description Consciously or unconsciously, basic computer skills are being integrated in these General Education courses through learner-based activities and projects that encourage technology fluency. These initiatives are being implemented for quite some time now and through the various curricular revamps done by each department of the CASE, basic computer skills and competencies are now being integrated in various topics and subject areas.

This will benefit not only the learners but also the UMak community as well. In the case of the learners, they don’t need to take up basic computer courses which they already have mastered themselves through independent learning. This on the other hand, will also answer the problem of lack of classrooms by the university. Teachers handling basic computer courses can focus on the advanced computer subjects.

IV. Goals & Objectives The goal of this program is to establish level playing field for technological skill through the GE subjects by end of freshman year. The objectives are as follows: To infuse technology as an integral part of the broad learning experience. To strengthen faculty, students and programs To empower and engage faculty and students alike.

V. Methodology & Management Mathematics – basic quantitative applications; use of new software; exploration of features English 1 – 4 / Social Science / Humanities – Information Literacy requirement -- efficient techniques in database & internet research

VI. Benefits / Anticipated Outcomes Since these General Education subjects are taken by all students, the need for a basic computer course would no longer be necessary. Students can take up other subjects that suit their needs. General Education subjects become more relevant and responsive to the student’s needs. Assessment is embedded within the general requirements of these courses.

After completing these GE courses, students will: Inquire critically, solve problems creatively, make decisions ethically, and communicate effectively. Understand the moral responsibility to use their skills as engaged citizens.  Recognize that global problems can be addressed through local action. Have the courage and curiosity to be adaptable, lifelong learners.
