Slide 2: Review the wellbeing Pie Discuss what special ingredients students add to ensure their wellbeing is good/ strong? What ingredients do you need to add to each slice of your pie?

Today’s Lesson - Feeling Happy Body Signs What makes me happy? How do you know I’m happy? How do others know I’m happy? Review last lesson’s Happy Body Signs: face smiles, eyes sparkle, laughing shoulders relaxed, moving, jumping, calm breathing, friendly, chatting, brain thinking about good things)

WILF I can tell Happy FIBS by using my Strength Bar WALT learn about FIBS Recognise that “happy” Feelings have different Intensities Recognise our Body signs are associated with feeling that way Recognise Situations that make us feel this way WILF I can tell Happy FIBS by using my Strength Bar FIBS stands for Feelings, Intensity, Body Signs and Situation. In this case the feeling is Happy

The Feeling Happy Strength Bar Here is a picture of the Feeling Happy Strength Bar. Like the energy bars in computer games it goes from red, to orange, to yellow, to green and to dark green. When we feel happy, a positive feeling, we are at the green end. It feels good to be at the green end. Sometimes we feel just OK, that’s when we are in the middle of the strength bar, in the yellow zone. When we don’t feel so good, like when we are feeling unhappy, we fall into the red zone. Who can guess what the numbers under the bar mean? They tell us how strong our feeling is. Sometimes it can help to use numbers to describe how strong we are feeling. So when we feel “very happy” we are a green 4 on the happy strength bar. How about when we are feeling just “a bit happy”? Green 1 Etc, etc..

How happy are the bears? Very Unhappy OK Very happy Unhappy Happy Discussing each bear discuss: How happy is the bear? (Intensity) How do you know (Body Signs) Draw lines from bear to the number/colour on the strength bar Can you think of situations when you are feeling this happy?

How happy is Adam? Very unhappy Unhappy OK Happy Very happy Discuss each of the 4 scenarios After each one discuss: 1. How happy does Adam feel? How do we know (Body signs), highlight different intensities of happy depending upon the situation Adam is in 2. How happy would they feel in the same situation? (children could be given post it notes with their name on it and invited to come to board to stick their note on where they would be in the same situation as Adam) Highlight that in the same situation everyone had different strengths of happy. Adam and Kate win a trip Kate gives Adam a lolly Kate invites Adam to her party Adam wins Connect 4

Feeling Happy Activity Activity: Give children a piece of paper and ask them to write down a situation where they have felt happy in the past week. Could role play it if like. Then invite the child to stick their paper on the strength bar to show how happy each situation makes them feel. Highlight: different situations makes us feel different intensities of happiness and the same situation make different people feel different strengths of happiness.

Feelings like happy Today we have discussed the feeling happy. There are feelings like happy that you might know of. Brainstorm and generated feelings of different intensities of happy. Write on the board. Eg: joyful, glad, cheerful, positive, joking, excited, delighted, content, overjoyed, proud, fine, relaxed, pleased. What body signs might tell you how happy (intensity) a person is feeling?

Follow up activity: Students can have their own copy of this and use it during the week. Teachers may like to do it at the end of the day a few times or when a student needs support with an issue.

Gratitude and Happiness When we think about things we are grateful or thankful for, this helps us to feel happy too. View The ThanKful Book What are you thankful for? Why does this make you feel happy? Slide 11 We have learned a little bit about the importance of gratitude. Gratitude is when we are thankful for the people, the things and our surroundings that make us feel happy. For e.g. We can be thankful for having a wonderful teacher, who teachers us new things each day. Learning makes us happy. We can be thankful that we have a house to live in to keep us warm and safe. Feeling safe makes us happy. We can be thankful for the sun shining so we can go outside to play. Playing with our friends in the warm sunshine makes us feel happy. View the Thankful Book Video Have students THINK-PAIR-SHARE what are they thankful for? Why does this make them feel happy?
