First Impression

Goals: To increase the time spent on task by our students. Make efficient use of limited space. Provide structure, access and orderliness.

When designing your classroom consider: Age of the students Number of students Size and shape of the room and placement of non-moveable items The activities to be conducted Available furniture Placement of electrical outlets, windows and doors “Decorations” Are environmental modifications necessary for disabled students?

Where to start?

4 Guidelines: Separate “high traffic” areas. Areas such as…? Teacher’s desk Computer station Group work areas Pencil sharpeners/trash cans etc. Water fountains Pick up & drop off locations for books and papers

2. Before students arrive, stand in different parts of the room to be sure that you will be able to see all of your students. What sorts of things might interfere with your visual monitoring? How do you position yourself while helping students?

3. Be sure that all of your students can see you as you instruct. Do so by sitting in their seats (and slouching down to their height)

4. Keep frequently used materials easily accessible
